Food Truck Options Expand on 71st/Continental

We're starting to get quite the eclectic mix of food truck options along 71st/Continental Ave. The latest is this juice and smoothie option. I'm wondering if this newest truck says anything about the changing demographics of the neighborhood as younger residents moving into Forest Hills and nearby areas are seeking out healthier, on-the-go, food options.

The Path is Clear for Northern Forest Hillers

This couldn't have come on a better day, especially with the grueling subway ride home today with its horrible delays. Northern FoHi'ers were greeted by the sidewalk in front of the new Aston condo finally being opened up for them after, what was it, years? No more having to be corralled like sheep into that narrow corridor. Oh, and I guess this means the CVS, which looks mighty impressive by the way, is about to open. What an improvement over that sad, depressing row of stores that used to be there!

Posting Concert Pics

Y'all know the drill, just like Mumford last year. Send in your Zac Brown Band concert photos to edgeofthecity@gmail.com and I'll post 'em to the blog.

Update: Very few pickin's when it comes to photos of this Saturday's concert. But here's one I found on Twitter. What do I have to do? Attend every single concert myself to get pics? Come on people! Step up! By the way, I did find it funny to see around 11p.m. a group of what looked like sorority girls who couldn't have seemed more out of place in FoHi giggling uncontrollably, beer cups in hand, as they ran toward their parked party van in front of the new CVS on Queens Blvd. Yup, some of these concerts are bringing them in by the party/sorority-van-loads from who knows where. The local bars and restaurants must be having a field day! And I'm so happy to see it. That's what I was saying all that time when I was railing against those visionless local politicians who wanted to demolish our awesome Stadium and put up senior housing in its place. Remember those days? Geez....

A Visit to Eddie's Sweet Shop

What better way to spend our first real heat wave than with a visit to one of the best old-time ice cream parlors in New York City? Luckily for us, it's just a short walk down to Metropolitan Ave., where you'll find Eddie's Sweet Shop right there at the corner of 72nd Road, where it has stood since 1967 (though an ice cream parlor at that location dates back to possibly as early as 1925, according to records). If you're new to Forest Hills, or been here some time and still haven't made it to Eddie's, it really is worth the trip, especially on a hot summer night. Not only is the ice cream great, but the place is absolutely hopping with ice cream lovers of all ages.

The Forest Hills Stadium concert announcements are coming fast and steady now, and the season is continuing into the Fall...

Couple of Closings...

Surprised that more people in Forest Hills don't miss the ices shop Uncle Louie G which used to open every summer on Austin St. right next to the Bonfire Grill. Yea, it was a little run down, but the ices and ice cream weren't bad. Anyway, that place looks completely closed, with construction going on inside it.

And then, I come back on vacation and see that the Lady Love Boutique at the corner of 72nd Ave. and Austin St. has closed. Surprised no one had contacted me about since it was one of the more eccentric-looking shops on Austin St. and in business for quite a few years.

You Like Me...

Just picking up on where the immortal Sally Field left off on a certain Oscar night in 1985, the Edge of the City Facebook page has 799 followers and needs one more of you brave souls to get it to 800. I invite you to be that person...

Search on for Missing Retired Firefighter

A reader alerted me to this (I was away past couple of days so didn't hear those choppers I guess a lot of other people noticed...)

From DNAInfo:
Forest Hills Police Looking for Missing Retired Firefighter

Police are searching for an elderly man suffering from dementia who has been missing since Tuesday morning, officials said.
UPDATE: The local precinct says Mr. Gorman has been found in Manhattan and is in good condition.
