Trivia Mondays at Headlines Ale House

TriviaNYC is starting a new weekly quiz night, Mondays at Headlines Ale House (Metropolitan at 72nd Ave). Headlines is a new place (it used to be the St. James), and while they've been doing quizzes around the city, this is their first weekly night east of Sunnyside, so it's kind of new territory for them. A page with some details about how the event will be run is here: http://www.trivianyc.net/mondays-headlines-ale-house-forest-hills/

Spicing Things Up At Jade

I just saw this news over at DNAInfo: Spicy Sushi Sandwiches, Mango Drinks Ring in Summer at Forest Hills Eatery about Jade hiring a new chef who's worked at Spice Market, Buddakan and 11 Madison Park.

I recently ordered in some food from Jade and not sure if it has anything to do with it, but was really amazed at the flavors of their simple chicken with broccoli dish. I cannot remember being so impressed with it from there before. Now I'm wondering if this is this new chef's doing. Whichever the case, the dish was incredibly flavored with a blend of savory and sweet spices. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend it. I had been kind of put off by Jade for a while because I was finding that the quality of their dishes didn't justify their prices. This one dish has changed my mind completely. I rank it up there with one of the best versions of this simple Chinese dish I have ever eaten (and that's a life-long New Yorker/Long Islander talking, which makes me an honorary expert on Chinese food).

El Coyote Update

For all those who have been anxiously awaiting the opening of the Forest Hills location of El Coyote. we will all unfortunately have to wait a bit longer. The owners of this new Mexican restaurant, located upstairs in the 'Austin St. Mall' complex tell me it could be a month or two more before the Forest Hills location opens as they work to secure the permits they need.

But, they also remind everyone that their Jackson Heights location is very open for everyone to visit! :)

Drug Store Wars

I hadn't been in the Rite Aid at the corner of 71st/Continental and Austin in a really long time and was really impressed when I stepped inside today. I had heard there was a renovation going on but had forgotten. I guess they're stepping up their game before the new CVS opens across Queens Blvd. (When? That is taking forever to open.) Update: A reader tells me it is supposed to open August 6th.

And a reader sent me a photo of the outside of the new CVS, pointing out that new trees will be going in in front of it. He also says that Jay's Newstand is scheduled to be moved back to its original site sometime during the next two weeks.

NY Mets CitiBank Event in Forest Hills

A few photos courtesy of metroBASEBALL Magazine of Friday's NY Mets event at our Citibank branch at the corner of Austin and 71st/Continental.

Hundreds filled the lobby of the Forest Hills Citibank branch in anticipation of a free Keith Hernandez autograph signing July 11 at Noon.

'86 Champ Keith Hernandez greeted fans, signed autographs, and posed for photos, for nearly two hours.

The "Keith Hernandez Magic Loogie Bobblehead" - a collectible from July 5th's "Seinfeld Night" at MCU Park - was one of the most popular items fans asked Hernandez to sign.

OvoSodo's Delivery Menu

The few blocks along Queens Blvd. from Ascan east now have some of my favorite food spots in Forest Hills, including the newest OvoSodo, Keuka Kafe, which I recently finally had the chance to visit for the first time and really enjoyed (and plan to post about soon), and Pollo Inca. And heading further down there's, of course, my big fave, Tuscan Hills.

New Police Captain

One of the blog's readers informed me that the 112th precinct has a new Captain, Judith Harrison, transferred from Jackson Heights.

Captain Thomas Conforti was transferred back to Flushing after two years here in Forest Hills, which was his second tour of duty at the 112th.

And that, my friends, is I think my very first post ever about our local police. A long time in coming!

Spectacular Sunset

A diminishing line of thunderstorms last night petered out before it reached Forest Hills, but not before creating this beautiful sunset over Queens Blvd.

Eddie's Sweet Shop Racking Up The Press Attention

Ok, so they're one of the best—and oldest—ice cream parlors in New York City. Now, when are they going to open up another, northern FoHi branch, so I can eat there every day? (Kidding)

Anyway, Eddie's has been getting a lot of positive press lately:

From:
The NY Times: A Malted Milk Crawl in New York
and The Village Voice, which ranks it one of the Top 10 places for ice cream in NYC:
The 10 Best Ice Creams in NYC, 2014 Edition

So quit all your culinary complaining about Forest Hills! At least we have some of the world's best ice cream (even if we, yes, stillllll, don't have a place to get a simple make-your-own salad like virtually every other nabe in New York (Sorry, just had to throw that in ; )
