I love featuring the different vendors from our fantastic Greenmarket here on the blog. Here's some pics I took of Pura Vida Fisheries which features wild-caught fish and seafood from Suffolk County on nearby Long Island.
Another fan of Paul and this fish stand. With that said, and as already pointed out, there's inevitably a wait time that typically far exceeds 30 minutes. Pura Vida really needs to start the set-up process much earlier than their current schedule. Last Sunday a managed to get there early enough (shortly after 8 am) to be 4th online. It was 8:50 by the time I placed my order.
It's gotten to the point whereas if I'm placing a Fresh Direct order that week, I don't bother stopping by this stand.
I'm with anonymous, the fish stand is way too expensive and risky in the summer. Forest Hills Fishery is hit and miss and not a bargain either. Fresh Direct is only good in the winter. In the summer, the fish sits on the truck all day and the opening of the truck door increases the temperature where the fish is kept, thus resulting in a bad fish smell coming to you.
The best place to go for fish is the wholesale markets in Long Island City that supply restaurants. These places get fresh fish delivered from the market and LI suppliers daily to distribute to high end restaurants in Manhattan. The wholesale prices are amazing too.
Love this stand!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks good, I enjoy flounder but $15/lb. is too expensive for me.
ReplyDeletePaul really knows his fish!
ReplyDeleteThe only good thing about the rain on Sunday was that there was NO line at the fish stand...normally I wait 30 minutes!
ReplyDeleteYou just got lucky - I waited 30 minutes! I don't mind waiting on the fish line because I always meet nice people!

I take it no one uses the forest hills fishery?
ReplyDeleteI do. The fish stand is expensive, plus I think that buying there in the summer is risky.
DeleteI have tried them several times but was never happy with the price or quality. I either do the fish stand or Fresh Direct.
