Chipotle Opens, Finally

Just a reminder: As of today we no longer have to venture outside of FoHi for our Chipotle. Now that's a wrong that has finally been corrected! (Next up, fingers crossed, Shake Shack!)

Coming Soon: New Indie Coffee Shop?

This is not a done deal, but I wanted to share with everyone some potentially very exciting news for Forest Hills. I've been contacted by a reader who says an independent coffee house may be opening as early as this spring in Station Square. The place could even potentially have outdoor seating. If this does come to fruition, I think it has the potential to be one of the best developments for our neighborhood since La Boulangerie opened its doors a couple of years ago. Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more details!

In the meantime, the proprietor says he is most interested in any feedback from local residents. He wants to know how interested people would be in the idea and any other suggestions you all may have. The floor is open... What do you all think about getting our very own indie coffee place to curl up with a nice hot cup of joe, or spend some time hanging out with friends?

On Dangerous Ground

This was on 71st Road today, between Austin and Queens Blvd.

Perhaps the City is now taking precautions after this incident?

Tea Time

Yikes, I feel like my posts today have been kind of angry. What can I do? Can't help it! On a lighter note, I am absolutely loving Downton Abbey more and more. Not sure if you heard that PBS saw its biggest ratings since the Ken Burns Civil War miniseries with this past Sunday night's Season 3 premiere. Deservedly so. A jolly good show! I just wish they'd stop making poor Mr. Bates and his lovely wife Anna suffer so much. Can't they catch a break? (Now I'm getting mad again...)

Al Jazeera Buys Current TV

Here's an editorial from The NY Times about the recent sale of the struggling cable channel Current to Al Jazeera, which intends to turn it into some type of an American version of its global news channel:
Al Jazeera in America
Doubts about the independence of Al Jazeera do not justify removing it from cable and satellite systems.

Of course the news reports about this were so poorly done that I was left quite baffled as to what exactly the new Al Jazeera America channel will be. And also, who it is meant to appeal to. While I am forcing myself to maintain an open mind about this whole thing, I have to say that initially the entire thing kind of enraged me. My first thoughts were: "Do they really think I am going to watch a news channel owned and financed by the emir of Qatar?? Why??"
I still feel this way as I write this. Personally, the way that part of the world treats women is a deal-breaker for me. Until they treat women with respect, I want pretty much nothing to do with them. I don't consider them worthy of my time, actually. I find the way they treat women absolutely disgusting. I don't care how much fuckn' oil money you have or how many palaces you live in, or whether you call yourself king or emir. Treat women with respect, with equality, and I will respect you. Until then, forget it.
So, until that time, the idea of an "Al Jazeera America" disgusts me. And I am pretty fuckn' angry at Al Gore for making money off of this as well.

Wow

There are so many, many things wrong with this I don't know where to begin... What an unmitigated disaster. And what a tragedy for our country. Makes me nauseous. I wonder how many of our tax dollars were used to pay for this settlement. And Republicans complain about our debt. Laughable. Looks like we're going to be paying for the horrors of the prior administration for a long, long time. I just hope we survive it.

More About the "Queens High Line"

A good article about the proposed Queensway in today's Times. If this happens it would really be awesome. Why? Because there's so few places to go for a long walk in our area without having to also inhale a constant supply of car exhaust.
In Queens, Taking the High Line as a Model
The Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit group, has joined with local residents to promote the idea of a park for Queens, like Manhattan’s High Line, where unused train tracks lie.

The Glorious Ziegfeld

Saw Les Miserables at the Ziegfeld Saturday night. I always love going to this theater, one of the last remaining movie palaces in the city. And I have to say there's probably no better theater in the city to see this particular movie. We're lucky to still have this great theater.

New CVS, and Austin St. Bar

I just noticed the latest rendering of the condo going up next to Key Food does include a CVS on the ground floor. The rendering has been put up on the wall at the construction site. I'll try to snap a photo of it. Just more evidence it will be a CVS going in there. I know people have been hearing different things.

Also, readers told me this morning that a new Irish gastropub will be going in where the Johnny Rockets on Austin was. Construction begins Tuesday with the opening planned for March or April. Some confusion on the exact name. One person said Spotted Pig, the other person Flying Pig.
