A second contract with Trocom Construction in Maspeth for the Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is pending at the Comptroller's office.

  6. Was in Boulangerie yesterday and overheard the owner discussing some work to be done to the space with a GC. The work is to take place 3 consecutive Mondays while the bakery is normally closed. Not sure what the scope of the work is-but I am guessing it has something to do with either making the seating options better or somehow making the counter experience more efficient. Maybe a modification to the millwork (at the counter) to allow pre-packages bread or pastry options so folk can grab and buy?

    1. Interesting. Yea, I saw they had covered the windows up and thought something was going on there. I'm not surprised because it's a prime location. Hopefully it will be a really good new place. But my hopes have been dashed more often than not. (Please not another store selling cheap trinkets!) But we will see! :)

  28. What do you think of nominating Forest Hills for neighborhood of the year at Curbed NY? You have all the reasons in your blog! (I am now hooked on La Boulangerie!)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While I agree with you about La Boulangerie, one out-of-this-world French eatery and a Chipotle do not make a Neighborhood of the Year in my book. How about we give it another year and see if we get some cool new places filling up all those empty storefronts on Austin? We also have a historical landmark of a stadium standing there with barely any use at all. What a waste! A perfectly wonderful plan to put it to use for arts events and concerts was voted down this year by the West Side Tennis Club. A MAJOR step backwards for our neighborhood.

I like Forest Hills a lot, but I actually do not think it really merits any Neighborhood of the Year recognition—yet. Sorry, but aside from the newly opened Farmer's Market, Boulangerie, Bareburger and now Chipotle (which many other NYC neighborhoods already have), what else could we use to support our nomination? You tell me....

      Delete
    2. Absolutely agree with you. Forest hills is definitely not one of the "hot" neighborhoods - it's just not there yet. We are slowly headed in the right direction since I've lived here - about 2 years. The conversion of the stadium for artistic use would have been huge, alas! We need more innovative cuisine, a few great cocktail lounges and to get rid of some of the trashy stores on Austin. Also, entertainment. Park slope has live music somewhere almsot everynight. With some of the new luxury buildings going up I do think this neighborhood is going to get a facelift. I think in 5 years this place is going to be very different than it is right now.

This place is fantastic and a great addition to The Austin-Conti Business District. The staff is great, the beer selection is exactly what this town needed. This is actually the fifth establishment the owners have created, so these guys know what they are doing and I am very confident this place will be around for the long run. With the recent addition of Mr. Vino's Specialty Foods, the soon to open Flying Pig; maybe this blighted neighborhood will get a 2nd chance at matching its past glory.

  47. I recently purchased a one way ticket to Penn Station at the Forest Hills LIRR platform and within hours got alerts that my credit card had been used for purchases in Canada. I contacted the MTA police to alert them of the possibility of a skimmer on that machine, but maybe you can let your readers know to be careful with the outdoor machines. They busted those people for the LIRR machine scam, but I guess they didn't catch all of them. I have no other reason to believe the number was stolen in any other way besides the ticket machine.

  49. Hoping you can help me. I shop regularly at Natural and C-Town, almost daily, and I use debit cards for all purchases. For the past two years, both of my debit card numbers (one from Queens County and the other TD bank) have been stolen and hundreds of dollars of purchases have been made, ranging from Western Beef in Brooklyn, gas stations in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and recently, a CVS and 7-11 in upstate NY. I have had to change my debit cards 4-5 times at this point.I've lost count. The only other place I frequently use my card is Duane Reade and Rite Aid on Austin and Continental. Either someone working in one of these stores is stealing credit card info or there is a security breach with their computer system. Both banks told me that things like this usually happen in smaller, independent stores, not big chains. I'm really starting to think it is Natural. I want to see if anyone else on your blog has had this happen to them. I'm going to go and speak to the managers of these stores to make them aware, but I first wanted to find out if there are others out there. This is beyond frustrating. I have to wait close to two weeks to get my money back every time. I basically have to use cash at this point, which is very inconvenient. This still doesn't solve the problem- there is some crook out there stealing people's info, I'm sure a bunch of people may not even be aware of it since not everyone checks their statements. Please help me and get this news out there. Thanks! Bea

    2. A friend of my mother's who receives food stamps tried using them at the Natural, and she noticed that, over the span of a few weeks, each time she spent them there they "mistakenly" added a few extra dollars onto her total. Five here, seven there, not very much, really - and she never would have noticed if she wasn't in the habit of checking her receipts. But still...shady.

      Delete
    3. Family member had the same thing happen at Natural. She called the bank and they said it was not a swipe with a signature which she always does, but the number was punched in. She didn't have to pay the charges and the bank probably decided not to fight it because it was a low amount, but they should really investigate this credit card fraud as it seems like it is happening to others too. She pays cash there now if she shops there since the managers at Natural didn't do anything after she told them.

  62. Can you please do a story about what a horrible trap Parker Towers is? Forest Hills is wonderful, but people shouldn't come here if it means having to move into Parker.

The two buildings where management isn't located are practically falling apart. The buildings are infested with roaches and mice, there's often only 1 elevator working for the entire building. People get stuck in the elevators and have to be rescued by the fire department. Not only that, but they lure new people in with "cheap" (ha) rent for the first year, then ridiculously raise it by more than 25% the next year when people are settled in. The management is rude and entitled. Everyone is always trying to escape this horrible trap of a building.

  77. Not that it is in the Austin Street-Queens Blvd paradigm, but there is a new law that bans turning left onto Queens Blvd from the south side of Yellowstone Blvd. They are also tearing apart and rebuilding all of the islands at the Queens-Yellowstone mega-intersection

    3. I don't think so. Doors open at 5;30 and he goes on at 7. I saw him at MSG last year and there was no openeing act either. How did you get the CD? I never got the email they said I'd get. I emailed Ticketfly several times and they were nasty each time, telling me it had nothing to do with them. Uh, I got the tickets from you and it said about the CD on YOUR website.

  85. The homeless in Forest Hills are really bringing down the neighberhood. First a 7-11 and now more homeless men/women wandering around and in McDonald Park. People are now camped out in the 71st Ave. subway station. Why is the neighberhood being allowed to deteriorate like this? Is there anyone leading a concerted effort to get things cleaned up???

    1. What does a 7-11 have to do with homeless? I am not homeless and yet I rely on the 7-11 for my critical supplies of Doritos and Big Gulps.

  93. Re: the shopping area on 108th Street. It is still pretty vibrant, but in the last few years several long-time shops (Lemon Drop,eg) have closed and nothing has replaced them. This is mostly on 65th Ave. It is uncharacteristic of the area and the place is beginning to look neglected. Entrepreneurs, please get those storefronts active again!

  100. I'd like to warn the other residents of Forest Hills of Con-Ed conartists. 2 days ago (Dartmouth and Yellowstone Area) some guys snuck into my co-op building knocked on my door and said they were from con-ed. They had id tags and tablets, dressed sharply. Said that there were changes to my bill, to sign on the tablet that I accept the changes. Odd, how the entire building is under one meter and all that, and everyone pay maintenance. So I said it's a rental they said they'd be back later that night and proceeded on to the other apts on the floor. Closed the door and immediately called the super who called the cops, and saw them running out of the building a few moments later. Guys could've robbed me, conned me with some contract, or just been scoping out apartments. Careful out there.
