I'm always let down by the way my peeps in Queens dress. It's Saturday night! Take some pride in your appearance! Especially the guy in the below the knee jorts, that's an actionable fashion offense.
I remember the days where everything was closed on Austin after 9 or 10 on a Saturday that wasn't named TGIFridays or Midway. Thankfully those days seems to be in the distant past
If Chipotle made you sick, I think you have a problem with food that has not been processed. Your body may not be used to rare vegetables and fresh cilantro. I am always amazed by the people who hate on Chipotle. Ya know what, do not eat there, and shut the hell up. Where do you eat? What is good. I would love to know.
FYI: You may have a a busy body photo here but I can assure you that 80% of this crowd do not live in FH. Just as FH residents do not shop along Austin on the weekends they do not party around these new bars on the weekends . The only FH hangouts for actual residents of FH are in the Square ( Jade , Dirty Pierre) so do not blame the tasteless fashion on the residents.
I shop along Austin St. on the weekends all the time, and I also go to the restaurants and bars. Why wouldn't I? Am I missing something? I must've missed the "Stay Out of FoHI Weekend" clause when I moved here.
I think your being generous at 80%, I would have given it a 90 at best. I find a lot more locals on Metropolitan Ave. I leave the cars at home on the weekend nights and will usually rely on a car service to get us out of the neighborhood. While Austin Street is a closer walk for me, The extra effort of walking up to Metro is worth the effort of not having to deal with riff-raff.
But I agree, none of those people in the photo look local.
Perhaps it's me. I just don't get why someone would choose to live in New York City only to end up living like a cloistered suburbanite, relying on the inconvenience and hassle of a car, for example, when there is such great public transportation all around us! And then to scoff at your fellow New Yorkers by calling them "riffraff"? Why not just move to Long Island or something?
While I agree with your assessment regarding transportation all around us; subway and train service is limited on the weekends vs. availability weekdays. Taxi's do not cruse for passengers on my block, so one needs to call a car service to arrange a ride. I choose not to drive because I will probably have a drink with dinner and don't feel like getting arrested.
As to my fellow New Yorkers being riff-raff; I was applying the term to what one sees on Austin Street on a typical weekend night, not all New Yorkers.
As to the suburbs, that is where you are going to find riff-raff, and fortunately as the cost of living continues to rise, more and more people will be forced to move to the suburbs. This is actually what happened in Paris, the suburbs are the new ghettos.
Lastly Drake, if you have an issue with the suburbs maybe its time to update your blogs tag line!
half the time public transportation is just as much as a car. it's like $30 to park at yankee stadium. $10 for two people by subway if you take the subway all the way there. close to $30 if you take the metro north to save time. $35 per person by LIRR to the beach. same with Six flags. and i will never take the subway to the bronx zoo again on a weekend. made that mistake once.
Public transportation is a greener way of living. City dwellers should use it whenever possible, since our survival as a species depends on it. Unless of course you drive a hybrid or electric car. So a few extra dollars, or humans cease to exist. For me, it's a no-brainer.
Great shot ... love seeing everyone out and about in the neighborhood on a warm summer night.

ReplyDeleteLooks like the same crowd from Roosevelt Avenue and 102 Street.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but it's nice to see people having a good time here.
DeleteI'd rather have this than an ocean of plaid shirts, skinny jeans and fedoras!

ReplyDeleteLots of people at Chipotle. I wonder how the stock is doing. Food is lousy there though. Made me sick.

Blech! in so many ways.. Your comment reeks of some type of superiority complex.
DeleteAnd why don't you just jump on the subway or bus? A car service just to get out of the neighborhood??
