EuroPan Closes

This would probably be a perfect location for one of those new yogurt places. Of course, I'd rather see that indie coffee shop I've been dreaming about...

  1. Oh, wow, I was actually surprised by this. Didn't they open less than two years ago? They were a bit on the pricey side considering what they offered, but their food was actually pretty good.

    1. There should be 4 yogurt places in Forest Hills soon, according to what I've heard: Red Mango, 16 Handles, Yogo Monster and Oko.

    2. What about the Tasti D Lites takeover store in the Mini Mall?

  3. Austin Street, the yogurt capital of the world.

  4. A bakery like Cannelle Patisserie (http://cannellepatisserie.com/) should be opened in Forest Hills.

  5. don't understand how they stayed in business this long. Food was lousy and service was indifferent.

  6. What do you consider good food, then? TGIF's?

  7. I used to get panini's from Europan. They tasted fine and I never got sick. Also had breakfast once before and again it was fine.

I also drank their cocunut water and Tazo Ice Teas before.

While the place wasn't perfect, I never had a problem there and it was good for what it was. A quick cafe place to get a bite to eat.

As to what will replace it, who knows. Likely also will be food related though since that whole section is.

  8. We need a butcher. We need a killer brunch place that does more than compete with free drinks. I'd also kill for a Panera.

    1. A butcher like Marlow and Daughters would be fantastic!

  9. Not really surprised, the food was okay but a huge turn off for me were the desserts that were played up at Europan. Even the vanilla cupcakes were gross and how do you mess those up? I'm not a huge fan of Martha's but Martha's is clearly better than Europan dessert-wise and across the street so it's not surprising that Europan would get slaughtered.

  10. I'm totally surprised it closed. Food was only meh, but the place was never empty. It always had customers.

    1. Why in God's name would you want a bland national chain making bread for you on Austin St. when the very best thing we have going for us in the entire neighborhood is La Boulangerie, making not only some of the best bread in all of New York City, but an entire variety of other delicious baked goods and excellent salads and sandwiches? Why would you want anyone to compete with one of the true exceptional places we already have here? I just don't understand it for the life of me.

  12. Location will likely remain food related and hopefully remains a quick service place.

Panera Bread is good or another Cafe. Space will likely get utilized quickly.

  13. Europan has stores in other markets in NYC.

    http://www.europanbakerycafe.com/locations.html

They never listed the Forest Hills one on the website and that is the one which went out.

They had 2 locations in Queens apparently, one in Forest Hills and the other at JFK Airport. Unclear if the JFK Airport one at the American Airlines terminal will stay in business.

We can do better than Europan here and hopefully the next place in will be something good.

  14. yea gotta wonder why anyone in this neighborhood would want another chain..chains for the most part serve such generic crap food..Metropolitan has so much more to offer food wise then Austin/QB side of FH without the chains!

if I see one more chain open up in the Austin St/QB area area I just might protest LOL

  15. I agree Metropolitan st is taking over. Austin st need to step up. Not sure if Forest Hills Chamber Of Commerce is aware of that.

  16. How about a Shake Shack? I don't want to have to see the torturously bad Mets play just to get Shake Shack at Citi Field.

    1. You call yourself a Mets fan yet think they have been "torturosly bad"? Pay attention to the team you supposedly support & GFY.

    2. Geez, how are we ever going to solve real problems in this world if grown men hitting a little ball with a stick arouses such hostility.

  17. Shake shack would be awesome and they are a pretty big operation now so all the chain lovers would be happy too

  18. Still would prefer a coffee house with a performance space. I've eaten enough shake shack to know its hit or miss with them sometimes and frankly, watching the Mets isn't that bad. Lol.

  19. eh I could live without performance space but good coffee would be awesome..if not shake shack or coffee how bout a good taco joint or some really good falafel..if you havent tried Taim in Manhattan or King of falafel in Astoria do it now lol what we have now as far as falaf and tacos is shameful

  20. A Seattle-style like coffeehouse (NOT Starbucks) would be cool. How come Smith Street in Brooklyn and Broadway/30th Avenue in Astoria has so many good places to eat and Austin Street is overpopulated with crappy chains?
