Gloria Pizza - Early Review

I just visited our newest pizza place, Gloria Pizza, next to the Midway Theater and took home a couple of regular slices. My verdict: the pizza was very good. And, I also like what they've done with the place.

My first two regular slices from the new Gloria Pizza in Forest Hills.
First, the pizza. My impression is that it is a traditional type of New York City pizza, helped by a sauce that is both sweet and a tad more spicy (garlic I think) than is typical. And the combination of that and the excellent, crunchy crust, lands a regular slice at Gloria a notch above your typical NY style pizza. I want to try their pizza again, but on first impressions I might rework my ranking of my favorite local pizza to this:

1. Tuscan Hills
2. Nick's (pepperoni pizza)
3. Gloria Pizza
4. Nick's (regular pizza)
5. Portofino

If you prefer a more traditionally cheesy NY style pizza, then I would rank them this way:

1. Tuscan Hills
2. Gloria Pizza
3. Portofino

Gloria is a very close second to Tuscan Hills, by the way. For me, it depends on whether I'm looking for a more filling couple of slices (Gloria) or a lighter pizza with amazing flavor (Tuscan Hills).

As I mentioned above, I am also impressed by what Gloria did with the inside of the new place. It's a very airy, comfortable space. They did an excellent job.

So my initial, early grades:
Pizza (regular slices only, mind you): A
Restaurant: A

  1. You never mention Pizza Classico in the Stop n Shop shopping center. Its the best pizza around. Lillians is also very good when fresh.

    1. I'm one of those carless city dwellers, so I don't stop nor shop at Shop n Stop, sorry. That's why I don't mention it. I happen to believe that if you are lucky enough to live in a metropolis with a world-class public transportation you should do your part to save the planet and use it.

    2. You can get there via the Q23 bus (it's the last stop). We don't have a car either, but Stop N Shop is worth the trip (Key Food and Country Market are awful and overpriced)

  2. If you are already going to take the Q23, go to Trader Joes. Stop and shop is expensive when compared to Trader Joes. Unless you have to have lots of brand name junk food, or a particular mayo, etc. Then, well, stop and shop is better than the Key Food monopoly of Forest Hills.

  3. I like saucy which I don't find is the case with Tuscan, so I'd rank Gloria's above them. I think you should add Lillian, they're pretty good, massive amounts of cheese though...

  4. Lilliana is so greasy! I had to take a shower after eating there!

  6. what kind of slice did you eat that it was amazing? I had a regular slice and it was just ok..nothing to run back for ever..I had high expectations for this pizza and left disappointed. I will go back and try other stuff but the regular slice was dry and boring

    1. Where did you go? Gloria pizza regular slice is never, dry. It's always on the saucy side. All slices I had were loaded with sauce.

  8. Pizza Classica:

    1. It is in Glendale - NOT Forest Hills,
    2. It is OK pizza - not exceptional;
    3. Brick Oven Pizza - is a little better;
    4. The owner and staff are just RUDE!!!

Their other offerings are Good - especially the Soups

    1. LOL...you are nuts. What pizza in FH is better than PC? Nick's is soooooo overrated. (burnt and dry)

  9. Ate at Gloria's. It was good, but nothing that stands out from any other New York pizzeria. Their take on penne alla vodka was nice, but nothing over the moon. The pizza was fair. We'll definitely do this place again, but more because of convenience. Still, I welcome them to the neighborhood and wish them the best. I don't know why the last place failed, but the location should be a home run.

  10. The last place was horrible! I went there once after a movie and never again. They were the closest pizza place to me so that's pretty telling. I'm glad to have a decent place nearby now!

  11. Sorry Guys:

Gloria Pizza gets an OK and only an OK. It is not the be all to end all. Had much better pizza and for that matter much worse.

It is a telling sign of the pizzeria when they need to cook a pizza on metal ring. Pizza cooked directly on the slate is what makes the pizza crispy. It would be nice if I could find a place that uses semolina but that would be too much to ask for.

I will try their other offerings but again. Forest Hills lacks a good slice.

    1. Your comment came so very close to being intelligent, and then you had to ruin it. Tsk tsk.

I think it's already been established that Forest Hills has plenty of good pizza.

    2. The comment is stupid cause he does not like any FH pizza places? Basically called his comment stupid cause of his opinion. Think about that.
