Al Jazeera Buys Current TV

Here's an editorial from The NY Times about the recent sale of the struggling cable channel Current to Al Jazeera, which intends to turn it into some type of an American version of its global news channel:
Al Jazeera in America
Doubts about the independence of Al Jazeera do not justify removing it from cable and satellite systems.

Of course the news reports about this were so poorly done that I was left quite baffled as to what exactly the new Al Jazeera America channel will be. And also, who it is meant to appeal to. While I am forcing myself to maintain an open mind about this whole thing, I have to say that initially the entire thing kind of enraged me. My first thoughts were: "Do they really think I am going to watch a news channel owned and financed by the emir of Qatar?? Why??"
I still feel this way as I write this. Personally, the way that part of the world treats women is a deal-breaker for me. Until they treat women with respect, I want pretty much nothing to do with them. I don't consider them worthy of my time, actually. I find the way they treat women absolutely disgusting. I don't care how much fuckn' oil money you have or how many palaces you live in, or whether you call yourself king or emir. Treat women with respect, with equality, and I will respect you. Until then, forget it.
So, until that time, the idea of an "Al Jazeera America" disgusts me. And I am pretty fuckn' angry at Al Gore for making money off of this as well.

  1. It's already on in NYC, via RISE network TWC Ch 92.

    1. Is that the same one? I was under the impression they are launching an entirely new network just for Americans?

    1. That's fine. I just don't choose to watch a channel owned by emirs: "An emirate is a political territory that is ruled by a dynastic Muslim monarch styled emir." - Wikipedia

Sorry, life's too short to get my information from a dictatorship.

  3. The one on Channel 92 is Al Jazeera English. The new network is Al Jazeera America. I'm particularly pissed about this, as I was a devoted Current viewer. I will miss the truly progressive news programming... MSNBC is centrist at best. At the moment TWC abruptly cut off Current 10 minutes into "Viewpoint," I reluctantly switched over to MSNBC and the first face I saw was Michael Steele. That says it all, really.

  4. The emirs are awful hypocrites but we shouldn't fall to their level. Glad Al Gore made money and the emirs will probably lose money because their ratings will suck.
