New CVS, and Austin St. Bar

I just noticed the latest rendering of the condo going up next to Key Food does include a CVS on the ground floor. The rendering has been put up on the wall at the construction site. I'll try to snap a photo of it. Just more evidence it will be a CVS going in there. I know people have been hearing different things.

Also, readers told me this morning that a new Irish gastropub will be going in where the Johnny Rockets on Austin was. Construction begins Tuesday with the opening planned for March or April. Some confusion on the exact name. One person said Spotted Pig, the other person Flying Pig.

  1. You know what we really need around here? A gym. We have NYSC (expensive) and Lucille Roberts (crappy, scammy and women-only). I'd love to see a reasonably priced gym like Planet Fitness or Retro Fitness move in.

    2. I don't live in Glendale. And that location is absolutely in the middle of nowhere, even if you DO live in Glendale.

    3. I couldnt agree more re: a gym! I emailed Equinox about their budget line, Blink Fitness, and they responded thanking me and that theyll look into it. There is zero competition in FH and while the boxing club next to Eddie Bauer adds new life, i cannot imagine people are going to flock to the hills to take up boxing by the droves.

Email Equinox, PF, and RF. Why not. Nothing to lose.

  3. So an irish gastropub in johnny rockets, a beerhall gastropub next to mcdonalds and a irish bar rest replacing old vienna cafe. Sounds like alot of similarity

  4. The Spotted Pig is a well-known gastropub/celebrity hangout in the West Village. So I would guess the Flying Pig is more likely a name for Forest Hills.

  5. I know we have yoga places, martial arts places and now this new boxing joint... but I'd just like a regular gym that isn't $90 a month or a scammy craphole that adds on bogus fees and surcharges and refuses to let you cancel even if you have a month-to-month. A Planet Fitness would be great.

As for yet *another* bar/pub... oh goody. Just what we need. Is everyone under the impression that Forest Hills is a college town? Um, check again.

  6. I'm in favor of more non-chain restaurants, so if the food is good, I welcome it.

  7. Love living in the Hills, the convenience of it all... No shortage of restaurants, but I welcome a few more places to just "hang out"

    1. I wholeheartedly agree! Plus, we need to balance out the entry of the chains. Chipotle will do just fine without my money coming through the door. But I will do my part and send some dough to the new non-chain bars and restaurants for sure!

  8. Does anyone know if Liang's is still open? I tried calling them now several times on both numbers and nobody picked up. Phone was ringing for minutes.

    1. I noticed over the weekend that Liangs closed. It'll be interesting to see what opens up there.

    2. I live on same block as Liang's and I just stopped by to confirm this news. It says they are closed temporarily for a week from 1/6 through 1/13.

    3. Yup, you beat me to it Stephen. I was just there too and saw that sign. I can confirm they are closed only temporarily.

    4. I was googling commercial space for rent in forest hills just to see prices and liangs spot is listed for rent.

    5. I went by today and the temporary closed sign is removed and all the lights inside are out. Might be closed for good.

  9. Wow, so many pubs opening up: The Flying Pig, Station House and the yet-unnamed Irish place at Old Vienna Cafe. I guess people like to drink during a recession.

  10. It's going to be "Flying Pig". March opening planned.

  11. If it is a well-done gastropub, there is definitely a place for it in Forest Hills and that is a good location that was wasted with Johnny Rockets... Forest Hills definitely could use more Manhattan quality restaurants, especially on Austin St./Queens Blvd... I can't wait!

  12. An Irish Gastropub sounds awesome, but I hope that it's prices won't be as exorbitant as the Spotted Pig in the city.

Any other news of this Boxing Gym?

    1. Completely inaccurate. There are indeed indian restaurants in the area, or are you visiting this blog from Forest Hills, Pennsylvania?
