Mr. Vino's Cucina Opens This Week

This new gourmet food store on Austin St. will be opening sometime this week, possibly Wednesday. And what's more, in what many may find as a really great surprise, it features an enormous selection of craft beer! Check out their extensive menu here (ignore where it says it's opening Monday. I'm told that's been pushed back.)

    We have loads of food and beer and supermarkets and restaurants all over town.

    Are the beers really selling that well here?

  3. You two obviously have no idea about craft beer. You can't find the majority of the stuff on that list in Forest Hills or surrounding areas.

  6. The paper's off the windows, they're doing last-minute stocking and clean-up and they will be open on Wednesday, according to Nick, the owner.

  7. Looks like this store is going to try and cut into Emily's. Saw them unpacking Vosges chocolates. Seems like we just got another copy cat store. The owner obviously does not have an original thought.

    1. Sorry, but this is one of the stupider comments I've ever read on this blog. The place hasn't even opened yet. And given that my readers are anything but stupid, this forces me to conclude either: 1) you're a competitor who for some reason feels threatened by this new business, 2) you have a personal vendetta against the owners of this business, or 3) for some reason you don't want new businesses to open here that will improve our neighborhood.

      Everything I know about Mr. Vino's Cucina leads me to believe that we are all in for a real treat beginning tomorrow.

  8. Went today- they weren't open but let me inside. Wow what a store! This Is a great addition. The beer selection is amazing- food looked great too. I think that cheeses of the world needs to step up their game bc they sell similar products. But competition is good for the neighborhood! That is what keep mediocrity out which is what we have had for so long!

  9. The store looks really attractive from the outside and is much nicer than what used to be there. Nice signage and nice store.

    It seems as though for the most part businesses in this community are getting more upscale looking and modern makeovers. That Mexican place by the train station for instance which had a horrible interior and design and horrible food, is getting a full makeover with a beautiful interior.

    Business owners in the area need to realize you need modern and nice to succeed. Lots of nice places around town with the trend in that things are getting more upscale.

  10. Problem is there is way too much repetition of food and beverage items from supermarkets to individual stores and restaurants and the like.

    1. I just don't get this. You can't just have one of everything. You need competition- that's what brings a better product. I definitely want 20 different restaurants or bars to choose from. Not just a few.

  11. I agree with Anonymous above and I am sure the business owners agree as well.

    I spoke with the husband of Emily's owner last night on his way out of the store at about 8 p.m. He told me he wishes Mr. Vino all the success in the world and looks forward to buying specialty items there as he supports all businesses in the area. He said Vosges is a great product and that they would be stupid not to carry the line, but that Emily's has several new product lines coming in within 2 weeks that will simply blow the chocolate lover's imagination. He told me and I quote, "We opened this store May 7, 2011 with 138 candies and we now have over 1,100, and we have no intention of carrying cheese. The quality of Mr. Vino's cheese will determine its fate, not a chocolate bar."

    He told me that Forest Hills has approximately 40,000 families living within its borders, and that his wife's store as well as any other store in the area is simply incapable of servicing all 40,000 families plus those who come from outside of Forest Hills.

    So competition is healthy, and I think on some level business owners appreciate the competition.

    1. While your comment is packed with information and extremely interesting, what I find even more interesting is your ability to recall all of the facts and statistics he told you. Were you carrying a reporter's notebook when you met him or do you just have incredible recall?

    2. Oh, and it's also quite amusing to me that the question of whether Emily's would carry cheese came up? Where did this idea even spring from? Why on God's Green Earth would a cute little candy store suddenly decide to carry cheese? Maybe you should have asked them if they planned on suddenly carrying sirloins as well. It would have made just as much sense. I may be missing something, but this one has to go down as one of the truly most baffling comments I have ever read on this blog. Congrats!

    3. First, I am doing a story for my school newspaper on changes in Forest Hills. I have done several stories from information I have garnered on your blog. I read a post on your blog, and decided to inquire about it.

      Drake, if you are whom I think you are, you either are a newsman or were a newsman at one time.

      By the way it is not hard to remember simple facts when you have a Iphone recording the conversation. Reporter's notebooks are obsolete. But, I am more intrigued by your implication that your readers and commentators are incapable of remembering a 5 to 10 minute conversation?

      I think he said the cheese comment as an off the cuff joke because of my question.

      I think I will mention your comments in my column and send you a copy. Then you will know who I am, but I will still not know who you are.
