New Liquor Store

This is coming in to the corner of 73rd Rd. and Queens Blvd., where a T-mobile store used to be...

  1. That's my block. Maybe now's the time to start drinking.

  2. LOL, booze/bars/sports bars and yogurt places. That's all we seem to get here now. A little diversity would not go amiss.

    1. I would disagree with respect to liquor and wine stores. But I feel this way because I think the selection of Wine in town is fairly limited despite the arrival of Mr. Vino. I would be concerned about the viability of the business when you can shop on line from a place like Pop's in Island Park. Besides paying a lot less and having access to an enormous inventory of Liquor and the latest newly released wines; there is also better availability of special selections that the wholesalers would never offer the local store.

  3. Isn't there another liquor store further east on Queens blvd on the south side? I live on the north side of 73rd and i really wish there was some kind of coffee shop on that side neat the 75th ave subway entrance.

    1. No restaurants or other food businesses are permitted in the building on the north side of Queens Blvd. near the 75th Ave. subway entrance. Building has a rule against it. (And yes, I know the drug store and another store over there sell packaged food items, but that's exactly the point--they're sealed--not the same as a coffee shop or other food business.)

  4. I second the thought on the coffee shop. Good location for one with the 75th Ave subway station right there. Queensbury liquor is not more than 2 - 3 blocks from this location so another liquor store seems a bit redundant.

  5. They will most likely sell lottery tickets as well. Too many liquor stores in this area along QBLVD.
That would be three in a. 5 block stretch! Sad news for our community. This just cheapens things.
Look at Jamaica Av or Rockaway Blvd....see what I mean

  7. Even the wealthiest areas have liquor stores.

It is all about getting supply and distribution to the local market. This new store gets supply to the North side of Forest Hills, where there are large amounts of housing units. The south side less so since it does have competing stores, but still is in a location where none exist.

So even with all these liquor stores out there, people still want local supply to get from walking into a store especially during economic downturns like this one or some people just like to stock liquor for their guests or usage.

Liquor stores in the area actually make business sense moreso than other businesses which could have been put there.

    1. There's another liquor RIGHT ON THAT BLOCK which has been there for over twenty years, so no, they really don't have that area all to themselves.

  8. Remember the bank gave them the loan and they obviously did their market research.

    1. (1) How do you know that they took a loan?
      (2) How do you know they actually did market research?

    2. Yes, well said. How do you know any of this. Just another example of people not having any idea what they're commenting about.

  9. There are so many people here that want a coffee shop, including myself. When will someone realize this and take advantage? Once again spent today looking for a place to relax with a cup of coffee and could not find a seat in Starbucks or even Martha's! Maybe one day!

  10. Coffee shops are tough for owners. Putting places like Starbucks aside for a moment, think about how much you'll actually make from selling a cup of coffee vs. selling a bottle of liquor. I sell you a 3 dollar cup of coffe, and you're sitting in my establishment for an hour with a computer on. When I add up the total cost of that coffee (which includes the rent for the little spot you sat at for an hour), the profit margin drops too much. There needs to be bigger niche than coffee to make a proftiable business. Starbucks saw the light and did extremely well. But we already have two of those on 71st. So a third will only be competing with a proven drink market. Dont get me wrong, I'd love a coffee spot selling a variety of goodies from around the world, classy drinks that are expensive, but worth every sip. But with rents so high, they'd have to charge us 10 bucks a drink unless they were a franchise like Starbucks with money power behind them.

    1. But there's nothing for those who live/commute near the 75th Ave stop.

There's a bagel place on the corner of 76th Rd but that's not a convenient location to grab something quick in the morning on the way to work. It's not easy for some to eat at home. I try but sometimes I don't have time to just sit and not rush through coffee/food (which is not healthy to do in the first place).

A small coffee shop doesn't have to be on the north side, it can be on the south side within considerate walking distance to subway entrance for 75th Ave. I can walk underneath to do that.

I am not concerned about 71st/Continental.

  11. That's a fair point about the margins coffee shops earn ... keep in mind that there was a Mom and Pop coffee shop that opened ~ 3 years ago on Queens Blvd closer to Union Tpke, and it lasted less than 1 year. With that said, as much as I personally do not care for Starbucks, that T-Mobile location seemed like a great spot for one to open up.

The nearest Starbucks is down by Union Turnpike .. a pretty sizable distance for grabbing a cup of Joe. Likewise, the two Starbucks heading West are also way out of the way. There are all buildings within a multiple block location of the former Verizon store, and a subway stop that gets decent traffic through it on the morning commute.

I do find another liquor store in such close proximity to Queensbury a bit perplexing. From a selfish point of view, I'd also like to see Queens Blvd clean up its act. Tuscan Hills was a fabulous addition, as is the newly opened Keuka Kafe.

Maybe Starbucks comes in to where Spin City used to be?

    1. re: Starbucks in the Spin City location would be perfect considering that rent for that space must be through the roof (probably why there have been no takers in that space for so long).

It might be too big of a space considering the location but we need something.

the coffee in those quick stop convenience stores just off the entrances to the 75th ave stop stink! Nothing but bad unhealthy options (and sometimes old and overpriced crap sitting on top of the heat). Burnt coffee. I can't start my mornings paying for crap.

  12. Genius idea for Spin Cycle! I have been hearing that 7-Eleven is pacing FH again.
On a positive note, Kumon Learning Centers is taking the old Tuxedo shop by 77Av on the north side of QBLVD.
    A plus for FH.

    1. No one is renting that Spin Cycle space as long as the landlord and realtor (Madison Realty) keep it in such disgusting shape. Garbage inside, dirty windows. The laziness boggles the mind.

These co-op landlords don't care at all about the neighborhood. Most of them have no idea about commercial space and just were lucky enough to sponsor thirty years ago during the conversion to co-ops. A liquor store? That's a heavily trafficked corner with a lot of money coming from the Gardens to the subway, and the best they can do is another liquor store?
