Anthony Weiner is Running Against Himself

I don't know yet whether I would support Anthony Weiner for Mayor. I DO know that I thought he would make an excellent mayor in the past, but that was before the Twitter scandal when he lied to the press and all of us about what he was doing. Normally, that would discount him in my eyes from being a viable candidate. But this year, all of the other candidates are so not up to the job, that I too am on the fence about this. Am I willing to excuse what are clearly the actions of a troubled man who has an undeniable talent for politics and—if not for the scandal—posesses, in my opinion, the energy, intelligence, personality, heart, and—very importantly—THE CHARISMA, to be an excellent mayor of New York?

This is not about forgiving really. It is about whether a troubled person is up to the task of leading our city. Yes, many of us struggle with our personal demons. But his were so self-destructive, I wonder if he is up to the daily pressure of running the city. But then again, do I want Christine Quinn as my Mayor? Absolutely not. There is no there, there. She seems like all calculation and no heart. She screams "PHONY!" to me. Not the type of person I want as my Mayor.

So, let's just say that for now I am leaning towards supporting Anthony Weiner for Mayor.  And that's really only because, in my view, barring anyone else entering the race, at least for now, he is running against himself.

  1. You must be kidding. Weiner is no Bill Clinton, and never was, before or after the scandal. Weiner has no sense of shame. He has all the traits of the classic narcissist with none of the talent to hide his symptoms. The fact that we, as a society, have become so "forgiving" of such obvious flaws shows how low our standards have become. Who should we vote for next, Joe Paterno?

    1. Amen...this guy is trash. It's a sad commentary that anyone would consider this loser. The Mayor of NYC - Weiner? Without his scandal, still IMHO a no-run. Forget the words phony and creep... how could we elect a person of this moral fiber?

  2. Oops, Paterno is dead, I meant Jerry Sandusky.

  3. Yes, he's a creep. His larger offense was his lying about it repeatedly. I could vote for a creep (most politicians have some creep factor), but I'm not sure I can vote for a liar...

  4. Creep is an understatement. Remember how he vehemently lied to cover up the Twitter scandal.

  5. ".........She seems like all calculation and no heart. She screams "PHONY!" to me. Not the type of person I want as my Mayor......" This statement can be applied to just about any person seeking public office.

But really, what type of person seeks public office knowing the scrutiny and pressure that is on you and often at your most vulnerable times.

It is sad that our most capable political leaders have been brought down by stupid "character flaws". Maybe the French & Italians are right not to let such issues distract them.

    1. Lying repeatedly is more than a character flaw

  6. Sorry, forget to add:

I think Weiner is probably the only capable candidate to have stepped forward. I might have to hold my nose when I pull the lever, but I was beginning to wonder if I was going to miss Napoleon come January.

  7. Joe Lhota is the only viable candidate. He's not a circus clown, not part of the Democratic Tammany Hall club and represents the outer boroughs.

  8. Lhota is not the only viable candidate.

John Catsimatidis is very qualified and has run successful businesses in NYC.

Lhota was a political insider at the MTA in a governmental position. I am leaning towards Catsimatidis for this very reason.

I will support the GOP Candidate and the Democratic line of candidates from Quinn to Weiner are rediculous.

  9. An asshole who apparently spent a small fortune to marry his daughter off to Tricia Nixon's son and invite a boatload of politicians to the wedding...http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/node/1907007/print
