Liang's Space Taken?

A reader says this morning that the Liang's space on Restaurant Row (70th Road) has been rented. No word yet on by who. If this is in fact the case, that means it took about 6 months from the time the restaurant closed until the space was rented out again. Not sure where that fits in terms of average renting out of retail space, but just thought I'd throw out this little factoid. Of course, this is if what the reader says is true. I just passed by the space the other day and it still had the "For Lease" sign in the window.

Why is this a big deal? Because it's virtually a given that the space will be another restaurant, and despite all the great places opening in the last few months here in FoHi, we sure could still use some good new restaurants. For example, there's still a huge need for a really good all-around diner/cafe type place in the central Forest Hills area. That, and a new indie coffee shop somewhere in the middle of the neighborhood, and my dreams will be fulfilled :)

  1. if its another Chinese restaurant it better not be Mandarin or Cantonese. Sichuan and Hong Kong are my favorites now.

    1. Have you been to Tuscan Hills? While not in the center of the nabe, it's hard to find better Italian in the country. Yes, the country.

And I have really been loving he spaghetti and meatballs at Gloria Pizza. I think it's like $10 and it's amazing.

    2. Tuscan Hills is great, but you must be smoking crack to think it's the best in the country.

    3. I stand by what I said. I've travelled extensively and make the statement based on the quality of authentic italian food found in the New York City area and how it excels over that found in most other cities in the country. And, of course, based on my numerous visits to Tuscan Hills.

    4. Tuscan Hills is great, but it's not even the best Italian food in NYC. Marea is by far the best.

    5. If you notice, I said it's hard to find, not that Tuscan Hills is THE BEST.

    6. Change is fine if it is change for the better. This place is marginally better than its predecessor, but IMHO not good enough.

    7. And what do you base that on? Have you eaten anything from there yet? It just opened yesterday. And if so, have you tried everything there? If you're going to make a blatant negative statement, back it up with some details please.

    8. The food wasn't great on opening day. We'll see if it lasts.

  3. How about a SHAKE SHACK? Or would that maybe be a bit too small?

And what were you saying about Men's Warehouse and Apple?

  4. Really in the COUNTRY? I will have to try Tuscan Hills then! Recently I tried Dee's and it was definitely not as good as I anticipated.
I agree on Glorias their spag. meatballs are pretty good at a nice price! They are our go to for ordering Italian dishes.. but looking for a nice sit down place on the strip. Perhaps I will burn a few calories and walk over to Tuscan Hills to give it a go! I wish Portofino was good I live right by it but the reviews beg to differ!

    1. Tuscan Hills is good for that end of town. I don't know why, but a couple of months ago I was on my way over there, but somehow, ended up at the FAMILY. I had not been there in years and I knew the food was sketchy, but it was always a fun place to drink before dinner and kibitz with the other guests. Let me tell you, the food was gross and totally lacked any flavor. My bad!

As to Dee's, we usually go there for the Brick Oven Pizza. But I have to agree, we can use a couple of old fashioned checkered table cloth & gravey places. I wish Matteo's would open a place in Forest Hills. While I like their Howard Beach restaurant, I wish it was about a block further away from the Belt Parkway.

  9. For the sake of being topical, I passed the McDowell's site on Queens Blvd. just the other day...and it has been torn down. Only the "McDonalds" sign remains. Yet another fun fact to my tourist friends relegated to the history books.

  10. Too bad that Liang's left for Flushing. The owner Brian is a good guy.

A French bistro or a real tapas place would be nice.
