A Combo on Austin?

An observant reader sent in this pic leaving us wondering if the former Pasta Del Giorno space and the Second Time Around space next to it are being combined into one super-big space for... what, we have no idea. It's quite amazing that we haven't heard a peep yet about what this prime retail space on Austin Street may be about to become. Someone out there must know, and my email box is open and waiting at edgeofthecity@gmail.com.

Update: I found the job record for this site and as the commenter below said, it does indeed say they will be building an Urgent Care Center at this prime shopping location (believe it or not).

  1. No feedback for you on this space, but I did run into Roberto, one of the owner's of Tuscan Hills, last week. We were chatting outside of his new establishment (formerly, Just Like Mothers) and he mentioned to me that they'll be serving both American and Italian breakfast -- not only Brunch, but weekdays as well.

So, Pizza by the inch and a new spot for a weekday breakfast.

    I'm in!

    1. I was speaking to Marco, the other owner, yesterday. He said they are on track for next month.

  3. I believe that the newly combined space is yet another Medical Urgent Care Center according to permits filed at that address. Second level is the billiard place so I'm assuming its the street level space. Community Board 6 is not doing their job to support local business on Austin Street by allowing non retail uses. The street is not becoming to popular, hip and cool retailers or café (see Brooklyn) building owners with the vibe of urgent care and an expanded pawn shop. Not good adjacency. Community Board 6, Austin St BID WAKE UP. These groups and landlords must work together. look like Austin is headed in an ugly direction.

    1. too bad...a wasted opportunity. Urgent Care is a service that belongs on a side street. We could use a great Italian food shop like an Iavarone ( several locations but one on Metropolitan and Grand ) or a Ceriello's ( several on Long Is and Grand Cent Sta ). Both are great retailers + take-out and catering.

    2. Would love to see Ivarone in Forest Hills.

    3. What does Iavarone have that Mr. Vino's cucina doesn't?

    4. A lot more fresh pasta, fresh cheese, fresh meats and more reasonable prices. I would go to Iavarone over Mr. Vino any day. Check out the location in Maspeth or Mid Village.

  4. What a waste to put Urgent Care a few blocks down from another Urgent Care. This location had some serious potential. Too bad.

  5. I grew up in Kew Gardens and went to Russell Sage - spent lots of time on Austin Street. I went back to visit on Saturday and found it very sad - of course things change, but this time, not for the better. I would say that Austin Street has already headed in an ugly direction, compared to what it used to be, as has Lefferts Blvd in Kew Gardens.

  6. so we are going from 0 urgent care to 2 within a couple of blocks? What is going on Queens Blvd in the retail space of the new building opposite the Midway?

    1. Yep, I guess these new clinics are either for 1) The aging post-war generation of Forest Hillers, or 2) all the victims of late-night mishaps stemming from the new bars that have opened, or 3) both.

The new Aston condo will have a CVS, or at least that's what I've been repeatedly told for more than a year now.

  7. I don't believe it will be an Urgent Care. That block/ corner is a well known hot spot for food establishments.

    1. Well, I wish you were right, but that is what the work permit says it will be. Just relaying the facts...

  8. An urgent care would be great. Anything but another sub par restaurant that adds to nighttime traffic and noise is welcome.

  9. I've eaten at Medical Urgent Care Center on Broome St. in Manhattan. Great space, nice portions, and an extensive drink menu. Exciting to know their first borough location will be in Forest Hills.

  10. Wasn't the Urgent Care meant to be in the new construction next to Bareburger?

    1. Yes. Either it moved, or there will be two. Who knows? Maybe they'll open one on every corner and test to see just how many this neighborhood can support.

    2. LOL, forget about a restaurant row and get ready for doctors drive! Medical care up and down Austin St., woo hoo !

    3. I like the sound of that, 'Doctor's Drive.' Maybe they can make it into a reality show? Or do they have that one already?

    4. If you look at Bisweb, you can see that the two projects appear to be unrelated, based on the names of the people associated with each project. Plus, the one near Bareburger just received renewed permits in January, so it doesn't sound as if they are dropping this project.

  11. Another "Urgent Care" is opening on QBLVD near 78 Av. A large office. Who oversees these types of establishments? Seems like they are popping up all over! With the 2 opening on Austin, I would think we are at a saturation point already.

  12. Well, all these urgent care centers opening around us reminds me of when the neighborhood seemed to have an abundance of Russian run pharmacies, or anteka's as they called them. Haven't most of them now closed? I believe so.

  13. Urgent cares are popping up literally all over, not just FH

  14. Doctors are higher class than Waiters and restaurant staff so it does bring up the community. We have too many restaurants as it is but they are mostly subpar in quality.

So having more urgent care facilities isn't a bad thing.

I also note they seem to be doing work at the LIJ Building again on Austin Street as they removed the old LIJ sign and appear to be doing some construction again. It seems like a rebound in healthcare is sort of taking place a little bit.

  15. I'm a fairly young guy living in Forest Hills. And while (knock on wood), I haven't needed urgent care for the last 6 years that I have lived here, having one a few steps from my home is a definite plus. Rather than showing off yet another burger joint, the resale value of my home (and all other coops/condos in the hood) will benefit from telling potential buyers that medical services are right down the corner. And yes, most buildings in FoHi offer some sort of doctor facility but most are tired and dated specialists (the buildings, not the docs). For something less specific, like flu shots, cold medicine, or a random 3am outbreak that would otherwise require a visit to LIJ, I think this is a welcome addition. I'm picturing it will be something like these City MD's that have been popping up in the city. Union Square currently has one and while that area is more food/shopping centric, having one of these actually makes the neighborhood a little more home-y, feeling slightly safer. Maybe it's just me.

  16. Oh and hey, at least this may get more use than yet another T-Mobile or Well Fargo establishment.

  17. Unfortunately, these Doc-in-a-Box are one of the many foundations of the ACA, so they will be popping up all over. The goal is to create easy access and keep people out of the Emergency Room. NS-LIJ already has some Urgent Care locations on Queens Blvd. As to the old time Specialists, they will be gone soon; the hospitals are signing up all of the GP's and they will only be allowed to refer to affiliated Specialists. Single Payor, here we come!

    1. I should've bet money on my previous post where I stated it might be a City MD! Darn! Well, I for one welcome the addition. They're pretty swanky looking too (for a medical center that is)

    2. So one poster before wanted to take credit for closing down a joint and now you're taking credit for opening? HAHA!

    3. Spot on observation. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same person.

  19. I'd rather have an Urgent Care center than a funeral parlor. Now that would be depressing!

    1. I agree. The thing I really don't enjoy about Metropolitan Ave. is having to pass the several funeral parlors located next to the restaurants and shops. It's always a bummer.
