OvoSodo Menu

They didn't have take-out menus yet, so had to shoot the one on the front of the restaurant. But I think you can mostly make out what they have. Click on the image for much bigger version!

And, yes, that is a make-your-own salad option. So Forest Hills finally has a place where you can get a nice, healthy custom-made salad (like pretty much every other nabe in NYC has had for years already).

Also, they told me they will be rolling out delivery service in the coming weeks...

  2. Looks good. I noticed they don't have mozzarella sticks or a children's menu. I guess in time ...

    1. Wait, so $4 for the green and $5 for chicken. I haven't included veggies yet and I'm already looking at $10 with tax for a takeout salad. Eek!

  6. Will they have avocados as a salad extra?

  7. Forest Hills is a predominantly residential neighborhood and people probably make their own salads, seeing as there is precious little that is easier than making a salad. In Manhattan I can see folks going out to get a salad at lunch while at work, since they don't keep well unless you have access to a refrigerator. I highly doubt we will ever be swimming in make your own salad places.

    1. I don't, and thanks for calling it Manhattan and not The City

  8. i am skeptical of their pizza. at tuscan hills i had ordered the "margarita" pizza. it was not what i expected, more of a regular cheese pizza. it tasted disgusting, was soggy and just a pile of crap. i am interested in seeing/tasting their new place though to see if it is any better!

    1. Um, this is New York. Why are people who come here speaking languages other than English low class to you?

    2. Not sure where my original comment went... but this was it:

They've answered my bolognese sauce-free lasagna prayers with the zucchini entree option! Looking forward to giving them a try, although the amount of typos in the menu gives the place a kind of low-class feel...

  11. My parents are immigrants and speak foreign languages. It's not about that. It's a pet peeve of mine that I see time and time again in lower-end food establishments... that's all. No harm meant.

    2. I don't doubt that! I'm a fan of Tuscan Hills myself and am excited to try the new place.

    3. Excellent, nice to see another neighbor supporting local mom and pop businesses and not trying to bring them down like the others on this thread

  12. i agree with rabbit about the typos on the menu. it's a turn-off. if a restaurant cannot manage to present a typo-free menu, i have a hard time trusting that they take care with their food.

  13. Why do they need to make salad possessive? Should just be SALAD to be consistent with the menu.

  14. Irrespective of menu typos, my expectation for OvoSodo are high. I stopped in the first day for lunch and while they were working out some opening day kinks (e.g., full menu was not yet available, tables were still being put into place), the staff was warm and welcoming, and the food that I ate was up to Tuscan Hills standards (no big surprise there, as Roberto was in the kitchen).

The space is bright and modern. A welcome addition to the Queens Blvd landscape.

As for their Pizza, I simply cannot wait to try it. It's unfortunate that a previous poster found their pizza not to their liking. IMO, Tuscan Hills hands down has the best pizza PIES in the neighborhood, and I have full confidence that OsoVodo's slices (Pizza by the inch in this instance) will rival Gloria's.

Note: I personally like Gloria's pizza very much. I just feel that what the Tuscan Hills team produces is a totally different "style" of Pizza. Both good, just different.

I'm also super-excited to see what daily Specials are offered.

For me, the location could not be better and I see OsoVodo as a regular lunch destination (work from home and the locale is perfect for a quick meal).

Things I would have liked to have seen -

    - An over-hang at the counter. Sans the over-hang, the counter seating doesn't really work. Something that can ultimately be fixed should they find the extra seating necessary.

    - Booths. I miss booths. They're harder and harder to find. Guess I'm just an old fashioned Queens gal who grew up going to diners.

    - Add the Uova Al Pomodoro to the menu, and I'll be one happy gal!

  15. If someone orders one of the 25" pizzas, please post a photo. It seems awfully cheap at $15 for a whole 25" pie! Either it's cheap or it's not what I'm expecting

    1. Yeah, are we talking a 25" round pie? I would think not. I'm thinking it's a rectangle and that the pie is fairly narrow.

  17. I was shocked this morning.

No update on Hard Boiled Egg??? What if the dog defecated overnight in front, and we missed it? Or the owners brought the box of mysterious foodstuffs in, which could become a part of oh-so-exciting-i'm-going-to-piss-my-pants make it yourself salad??? Or the traffic on Queens Blvd was disrupted by long lines of reporters from Reuters, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, TMZ and Times of London, covering the grandest event of the century: second day of OvoSodo being opened???

    Very disappointed, Drake.

Ever since you broke the existence of Forest Hills into two eras: "Pre-Chipotle" and "Post-Chipotle", I follow your blog with excitement of a 12 year old girl opening TeenBop magazine. What's going to be new today? Will old-school Italian joint close and become a FirstMed? Will Bareburger introduce a line of deep-fried organic salt-water taffies? Will Banter be recognized by Nobel Committee as a Gastronomic Center of the Universe?

Please, keep up the good work and don't let us down. In absence of your coverage, OvoSodo could have started taking credit cards and we would be left in the dark!!!!

I hope to find a complete update tomorrow morning! Unless Flying Pig will be re-painted again and this will become big news story!

  18. First of let me start by saying I have been in the hospitality industry since 1994. Both front and back of the house. I am also a head Chef! Now on to my review. We went in choosing this over Portofino. We walked in there was only 2 tables and a man that I would later discover as the owner. He looked at us like we just came out the sewer. We stood there for nearly five minutes before being acknowledged. Finally we were seated by a rude waitress. She handed us the menu and disappeared for 10 minutes. Finally she reappears with water. Then ask us if we want something to drink. I ordered a ginger ale. She asked if we were ready to order. My wife ordered the Margarita pizza and I the sole in lemon butter sauce with broccoli. We also ordered the fried calamari. She asks if we want bread, we stated yes. 15 minutes later we received the appetizer, bread, still no soda. 15 more minutes we receive our entree. Now again let me state that I am a Head Chef, I received sole with mussels, shrimp, spinach, in a tomato sauce. Since when did lemon butter sauce contain tomato. I said this is the wrong dish. She tells me no I don't know what I ordered. Again let me state that I am a Head Chef. I didn't feel like arguing so I kept it. My wife's pizza looked like dried up cardboard with sauce and cheese. My food was good well seasoned, but I detest mussels! I tried to order another ginger ale to no avail! Now I. gather they just hired a bus boy cause he set the tables wrong. But the nasty rude way the owner talked to him was uncalled for especially in front of customers. Now back to the disappearing act of the waitress. It took another 20 minutes to get my food wrapped and the check. I asked for it 3 times and the owner saw me trying to ask for it and said nothing. Just sat there with a smug look on his face. We got the check and it took another 10 minutes to get it paid. Do I recommend this place! Only when pigs fly will I recommend this place to my dog!
