The new restaurant Reef opened this past weekend in Forest Hills at 98-2 72nd Avenue, the former Network Cafe location, and just across the street from The Irish Cottage. Here's some photos of the inside, along with their menu. I will post a review in a few weeks. (I always like to give a new place a few weeks before I try it.)

Going here this weekend. Hopefully the menu turns out to be as good as it sounds. Design and layout are very good. Decorative yet conservative and subtle without being too trendy or Manhattan-ish. Thankfully it isn't another urgent care center, pawn shop, bank, drug store or chain food dump.

ReplyDeleteIt seems to me the address in the post is incorrect. Isn't it 108-02 72nd Ave.? All Star Studios on the same block is at 108-21, so that seems more logical. (Not that Queens street numbering system ever made sense....)

ReplyDeleteA few Yelp reviews have gone up. The first one definitely is suspect, as it's the posters first review. The others are by more active Yelpers. Overall, so far so good. Will give this place a few weeks to work out service kinks and then give it a try.
Menu looks good IMO. I'm assuming there will be daily specials too.
I don't see anything decor-wise that would absorb sound. Why no ugly drop ceiling acoustical tiles, or dated-looking heavy drapes, or thick carpet to hide the beautiful hardwood floors? Oh, gosh, did I just answer my own question in the asking of it? I hate when I do that!
ReplyDeleteI know Drake likes to wait a few weeks but my wife and I couldn't. We went last night and the food was very very good. The restaurant was very quiet, (Tuesday night, Passover and rain) so I can't speak to how sound or crowds will change the place but the food was quite good. I had a swordfish steak and my wife had a whole fish (branzino). Both were simply prepared but delicious. We also had the baked clams which were fine and a country salad which was quite good. Overall, a great addition to the neighborhood and one to which we'll definitely return. Wish them all the luck in the world that the off Austin and scaffolding won't doom them.
ReplyDeleteI did go there over the weekend and also loved it. I'll post a review this week. The food was simply prepared and delicious and the staff very attentive. And, they told me they plan to expand their menu to lobster and other offerings.
