Something's Up in Santa Fe

That huge space on Restaurant Row (70th Road), former home to Santa Fe Steakhouse, is finally being worked on. Very curious as to what is going in there. If anyone knows please comment below or email me at edgeofthecity@gmail.com

  1. Heard that the owner of DaMikel Restaurant on QB is involved. Hope for the best.

    1. not really. it's less a resturant and more a party venue for the Bhukarian Population. went in for dinner with a friend once cause we were bored and were told to leave. not that they were booked, just, to get out.

  2. Also heard on Austin Street today at the former site of the jewelry store, Stoa....a bakery? The construction guy working on it said that.

    1. I was so sad to see that place disappear. The two women that ran the shop were lovely.

    2. Glad the place got closed.

  3. I doubt very much that DaMikel would be interested in opening something on that block. Borscht would not fly there.

  4. Loved Stoa, so sorry to see it go, especially the wooden sign. It was one of the few originals on Austin

  5. A Bukharian joint (with borscht, which is actually Ukrainian, and Lagman, and Chalachach, and Lula...) opened on 70 road already. It's called The Grill. The "Mediterranean" disguise could only fool civilians. Da Mikele owner opening next door to his paisan is only logical for those of us who have been witnessing whole Uzbeki/Kosher/"Russian" Renaissance of the past 25 years. If he could afford to take the entire East Manor behemoth on Albion Ave off QB in Elmhurst and turn it into a pink catering hall that's always closed, turning Santa Fe into another King David will be a piece of cake. Especially since there is a Bukharian Synagogue around the corner.

  6. Actually, some late news. I'm told a new apartment building might go into that space.

    1. How dreadful! I hated Santa Fe, but we need another apartment building in the neighborhood like we need holes in our heads!

  7. Anything Russian cannot be considered a "Renaissance"

    2. WHY!? Nothing would be better than a few more bodegas... We're short on filthy "deli" offerings. i mean we only have the four on 71st and empire and the abandoned now 50% off bodega on ascan.

  10. Looked inside today and saw construction workers on a break. They gutted everything except the bar. One of the workers said it would be another restaurant. That's all.

  11. Ok, so to sum up, this is what's going in the former Santa Fe restaurant space:
    1) A pop-up Halloween store
    2) Another restaurant
    3) A new apartment building.

Maybe I should start taking bets?

    1. It has to be something involving food.

  12. Let's hope it's another medical center, bank, drug store or fast food chain. We need more of these... ASAP!

    1. Don't forget about cell phone stores! God knows they make a neighborhood look artsy and sophisticated! The more the better!
