Chalet Alpina Closes

The German restaurant Chalet Alpina on Metropolitan has closed after serving up many a schnitzel over the years.... (Did they actually? I never ate there myself but assuming...) Are there any fans out there that are sad to see it go? And more importantly, do restaurants usually close like this when their owners decide to retire, or does that only happen down there on Metropolitan? ;)

  1. I went once. The prices were great and good German food. But German food is so heavy. So I think they were no longer as popular. The owners and staff were super nice.

  3. Zum Stammtisch does well but their pricing and wait times are bit much for what it is. (IMO)

  4. Used to work as a batender at the Zum to spell a fellow teacher who was a regular.Funny that one of the Chalet's owner was from the forner Yugoslavia, as that was the demographuc that was replacing the old line Germans in that area. We're now seeing a similar replacement scheme in NE Queens w white and Jewish ethnics and their associated
Stores, restos and houses of worship being changed over to Chinese/ Korean management. Change comes ever so incrementally, but it gets us all in the end.

  6. Great opportunity for new restaurant to come in and make use of the space. Hey 5 Burro: Time to expand! We're tired of overcrowding and hour long waits. DO IT!

  9. Me and my family used to go here a few times a year on special occasions. We immigrated to Queens from Germany in 1985 and have eaten there since we discovered it. We talked to the owners whenever we were in there and always had great food and it really saddens me to see it go. Wish the owner the best of luck!

    1. Maybe it was because they changed the waiter?

  10. It was a very good Bavarian style restaurant years ago, but recently wasn't the way it used to be. My in-laws went to go there a week or so ago to celebrate their anniversary& found the place closed with no note on the door at the time. Sad that so many wonderful places have gone only to be replaced by fast food joints. Hope the Zum Stammtisch never closes!

  11. My son and I loved this place. We would always chat with the owners. The food was very good. Reminded me of my mom's cooking. Another place bites the dust---Gebhart's gone, Niedersteins gone, Sammets on Onderdonk Ave. closed about 20 years ago. Went to Manor Octoberfest today on Yellowstone blvd. It was great!. Hope it stays put! We wish the owners a Happy Retirement. I really wish there could have been a grand ending there. It would have been fun to celebrate.
