End of the Year Poll - Part 1

  1. I haven't tried Red Pipe yet, but based on the amount of votes it's getting I guess I should?

Is it too crowded on the weekends? What should I order, as a first timer?

    1. a bit crowded on weekends during the day, but they have stools against the wall if u don't get a table , chair , or couch. Great lite music sat and sunday afternoons. I went in on a sat and saw a duo that played as I sipped coffee and did some online shopping, FREE wifi too. oh I suggest the Mediterranean sandwich, and or quinoa salad,

  2. Can't go wrong the latte. Mediteranian sandwich is pretty awesome.

  3. Honestly, the sleeper hit is The Grill; the food they're serving is head/shoulders above most of the places in FoHi. It's not sophisticated technique (ala Danny Browns) but the food is fresh and highly tasty.

    1. Even though the lighting is dim and the design is bland, we tried it out. The octopus app is amazing, best in the neighborhood. Can't vouch for other plates...

  4. Also, Silk Cakes is a true gem in the neighborhood.

You forgot End of Century bar; a true game changer to central Queens.

    2. I'm sorry but Silk Cakes is nasty! The cake part of the cupcakes are good. But the the buttercream frosting tastes and feels exactly like pure butter! It is hard like butter too. I guess you would have to really like butter to like their frosting.

  5. All these places are amazing. I am so happy and proud to live in Forest Hills queens. I am glad that these little mom/pop shops and restaurants are opening up around this area. Hope all these places stay with us for a long time. We will support them all.

    1. I agree. Forest Hills is moving to the right direction. We definitely should support all these new places.

  6. Only one on the list I've been to is El Coyote. It's a huge improvement from Garcia's and a good alternative to 5 Burro if the wait is long. At some point I will venture to the other places though I don't know if I will go to Austin Public. I was incredibly disappointed when it was Flying Pig.

  7. Long Island city has sweet leaf. Astoria has the queens kickshaw. WIlliamsburg has oslo coffee roasters. Lower east side has cafe grumpy. Well now Forest Hills is on the hip list and it's RED PIPE. Glad we are slowly going up forest hills.

    1. Let's not kid ourselves -- Red Pipe is not (yet) on the same level as upper end gourmet coffee purveyors such as Laughing Man, Budin, Cafe Grumpy, Abraco, etc...

They do have good potential though; need to lay off on the 'Organic' overexposure and increase the 'hip' factor...!

Let's not forget that Silk Cakes is producing some great coffee with Stumptown roasts. La Boulangerie does not serve good coffee, sorry to burst peoples bubble...

    2. Well, slowly but surely they will get there. The place is awesome.

  8. Red Pipe is good except that they serve the sandwiches on paper plates. The coffee is served in a cup and saucer and they also have silverware, so I'm not sure why the sandwich comes on a flimsy paper plate. They also need better lighting. I couldn't read my book, the lighting is very dim and a bit depressing. The coffee and sandwich were both delicious.

  9. The primary issue with Red Pipe right is that they seem to straddle an era of early 2000 and an attempt at 2010+. The environment is more akin to a Starbucks but with some elevated coffee.

Honestly, maybe they need to hire some Brooklynite Hipsters and take notes from places like Cafe Grumpy to increase the cool factor.
