An interesting story in today's Times about more and more tourists checking out our Borough:
“Queens, New York’s largest borough, is also quickly becoming its hippest, but most travelers haven’t clued in ...yet,” the travel guide company wrote in its endorsement of the borough as the top destination for 2015. “With microbreweries springing up, new boutique hotels, a reinvented seaside at Rockaway, a world-class art scene and a truly global food culture, 2015 is the year to try Queens.”
José Barreiro, the Lonely Planet advertising executive who participated in the tourism panel in Long Island City, told the audience that the company is “trying to get ahead of those places that are hip and cool” and identify destinations that “are untouched by tourists.” (Brooklyn received a similar imprimatur from the guidebook company in 2007.)
Did a realtor write this piece? How many more acronyms will be thrust upon the simple, good meaning people of this diverse borough (FoHi?)...
ReplyDeleteI always say, Queens ain't cool (Brooklyn is, sorry; the youth culture there is smart and fun) -- but it is interesting; actually one of the most interesting places in the world due to the diversity. I go around to all the 'ethnic' eateries throughout the tri-state and most of my explorations (neo-colonization?) have kept me in Queens (Bolivian, Paraguayan, Uzbek (Bukharian), Tibetan, different provinces of China, etc...).
As I push further into my 30's, I start to value interesting more than cool...
FoHi needs to promote its latest attraction: an "Ugly McMansion" tour. There are so many of them popping up in Cord Meyer (with more on the way!) that tourists would find plenty to gawk at. Now that's interesting!
DeleteAs a long time resident of Forest Hills Heights I think it's undignified that my younger neighbors have started calling the area FoHiHe.
ReplyDeleteIf that's sarcasm, it's mighty good stuff. HA.
DeleteWhat is Forest Hills Heights?
ReplyDeleteLIC. LIC. LIC. THERE'S MORE TO QUEENS THAN LIC!
ReplyDeleteLIC is the lamest, least character based part of Queens. --> I almost consider it Manhattan or North West Brooklyn at this point. Banker douches, tech jerks from the west coast, just a whole bunch of transplants. When someone tells me, oh yeah I've been to Queens --> I'm already thinking, what - Astoria or LIC; 85% this is the response. Then I think, you haven't been to Queens...
DeleteForest Hills Heights is Austin St. to Queens Blvd., and Ascan Ave. to 75th Rd. Some realtors extend the border closer to Kew Gardens but that's merely bogus marketing.
ReplyDeleteForest Hills Heights? Please don't call it that. That's just plain silly.
DeleteSeriously? This is a thing? That's funny, because I spent several months apartment hunting earlier this year and did not see that term used in one single ad, on any website, or by any realtor or broker. And I checked at least 20 of them every 15 minutes for 3 months. But no, "Forest Hills Heights" does not exist. It certainly hasn't in the almost 20 years I've been here.
DeleteThe first rule of living in Forest Hills Heights: you don't talk about living in Forest Hills Heights!
DeleteI live in FoHINoQu...north of Queens Blvd
