What's Up With Strawberry?

Just what is going into the two-story former Strawberry location on Austin Street in Forest Hills? There have been some very odd murmerings about this location over the past couple of weeks, hinting that something big is coming in. And now, this morning, one reader says she heard from someone that it will become a Shake Shack. In any case, excitement is building and rumors are flying. Should be interesting to see who the "major retailer" said to be coming into this space will actually be.

  4. Odd rumor, considering that the Shake Shack at the Queens Center is supposedly already under construction.

  5. I've heard either JCrew or H&M.

  6. we have bareburger across the street - for shake shack to come that would be a little ridiculous

    1. The only thing Shake Shack and Bareburger have in common is that they sell ground meat products. I know I'm in the minority, but personally find the Shack burger to be world's better than Bareburger who changed their menu and lost my favorite things!

    2. I don't agree. Bareburger is great and I love it. But I don't see why Forest Hills couldn't support more than one high-end burger place. (And, yes, FH has other burger places like Cheeburger and Twist and Smash'd but I don't consider those to be high-end places).
Also, Shake Shack is looking to expand and I think Forest Hills would be a very successful location for them. All you have to do is go look at the crowds lining up at Bareburger every weekend to see that there is a lot of unmet demand for high-end burgers in Forest Hills.

    3. Wolf is correct, Bareburger is "barely a burger" and Shake shack would be a huge upgrade.

    4. Big B, there is no such thing as being "correct" about whether Bareburger or Shake Shack has better food. It is a matter of opinion, so nobody is correct or incorrect. In my opinion, Bareburger is a great place with excellent food and excellent service. I feel the same way about Shake Shack.
But my point was not about which place has a better burger. My point was that both Bareburger and Shake Shack are high-end burger places and that Forest Hills can support more than one high-end burger place. I think most people who like Shake Shack better would acknowledge that Bareburger is a high-end burger place.

  8. So, wait: Target is the devil, but J Crew is OK?!?! Target is evil and should be protested because it is pushing out another chain that didn't innovate, but H&M (a global chain) is welcome. Ohkay, Forest Hills.

  9. Why would anyone want a chic chain like Shake Shack gracing Austin Street when we could have another jewelry store or maybe even a dollar store. ;)

    1. I wouldn't mind a decent-quality "dollar store" like Jack's. That Value Depot is horrendous.

  10. So another clothing chain, even though one just moved into the Benetton space… didn't Benetton sell stuff similar to J Crew? And we already have Gap, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, etc. on Austin St. Isn't H&M fairly similar to Strawberry? I want a cheap, modern gym there, like Blink or Planet Fitness.

    1. There's a 24 Hour Fitness on Union Turnpike where Bally's used to be. Ironically, that location is not open 24 hours, despite the name

    2. I don't want to get on the subway to go to/from the gym.

    3. Um, NYSC is $19.99. What do you want, a free place? And it's pretty modern. We can't have an Equinox at bargain rates. The NYSC is far superior to the women's gym nearby. It also offers incredible classes, though they're tougher to get into these days.

    4. I pay 80 a month for NYSC. That sale is for new members only.

    5. UM, the $19.95 rate at NYSC only allows you to use one location and comes with a $49.95 annual fee and $19.95 joining fee. If I want to use the gym either at home or at work with no contract, that goes up to $69.95/month plus the $49.95 annual fee. NOPE. Big difference between that and "free," which I never suggested… you did.

  12. from what I am told, the contractors working on the building have said it is Shake Shack. I personally believe Shake Shack may drive others out such as Smashed(?) and not only are their burgers good, but they will do a great summer business with their amazing shakes.
