Another Hair Salon for Austin St.

The former Brownies & Cream space has been unoccupied it seems like forever. Well, not for long! Another hair salon is coming soon! Thanks to Karen for sending in the news, and pic. Now, whether we need another hair salon in The Hills is a question I leave up to you guys...

  1. We don't. At all.

  2. No, not at all. I almost feel bad for these people who open up shops where there is already an abundance of what they're offering us. Do they not research their locations first?? I mean it's better than leaving another store for rent, but I don't think the new salon will do well at all.

  3. Ice cream, burgers, and hair salons. Love American capitalism.

  4. The barber/hair salon known as Eli next to Dunkin donuts just closed and is listed for rent.

  5. From the look of that sign it's going to be VERY fancy schmancy.

  7. Forest Hills appears to be catered to children and old people. Even 'mature' places still serve kidult food (i.e. ribs and burgers -- looking at you Station House). Why can't we get adult places -- you know, exposed brick, wood, tapas -- someplace that might popup in Brooklyn (i.e. Franny's, Delaware and Hudson, Al Di La, etc...). How many ice cream shops do we really need??!?!?

    1. So you are saying you think 17 ice cream stores in a 1/8 mile stretch is too much? lol

    2. Finally tried Matiz on QB over the weekend- YUM. Definitely worth the Austin St. departure to check out this "mature" gem.

    3. I agree, Matiz is definitely worth a visit. The food is very tasty (although a bit pricey for me to go back too often).

    4. Matiz is awesome! Anything I've gotten there has been top notch. It's Latin with a gourmet touch. Their lunch specials are great. I wonder what will come in the Family Restaurant space. That place is huge. With all the stores for rent, the area has a lot of room for growth for the right business, just no more ice cream shops! On a side note, I wouldn't be surprised if the Snow Story place is only a summer thing. Has anyone noticed how dull the inside looks? Plain beige walls, not inviting in any way. Looks like a short term thing.

    5. Agree we could use some "mature" places that doesn't try to be everything to everyone age 6 to 60. There's a niche here that's not being met. Nothing "sexy" within 5 mile radius. Hard to find a place for date night sometimes have to pop over to Brooklyn for something grown-up.

    6. I've heard several folks say positive things about Matiz. Personally, I simply cannot bring myself to eat at a place that has a B rating. Anyone ever check out "why" restaurants receive the rating they do? - http://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/services/restaurant-grades.page

  10. Any news on when bath and body works closed and what's being constructed to take its place? Also noticed Austin public was closed today.

  11. The hair/nail salons and urgent care centers are driving me absolutely insane and have made me so incredibly disappointed in our hood. This is such a great business retail opportunity and we're so over saturated with the same damn businesses!! I've been wanting a wine bar or lounge for the longest time and yet here we are getting another salon. The bramsonort college is now an urgent care center. Ugh and that Jembro replacing Value Depot. Whyyyyyyy

  12. Austin Street will look like a mish mash of Jamaica Av and Main Street in the very near future.

    1. As if. Have you seen these businesses (or anything like them) on Jamaica Avenue or Main Street: Shake Shack, Station House, Bareburger, La Boulangerie, Natural, Martha's, Rove, Mr. Vino's Cucina? And most of these businesses have opened in the last few years, which shows that the direction Austin Street has been going in the last few years bears no resemblance to Jamaica Avenue or Main Street--Austin Street has only become more upscale in the last few years and will most likely continue to do so in the next several years.

  14. Brownies and cream: A bakery that usually opened after the morning rush and closed before the evening. Talk about not knowing your customers.

  15. Humor me on this one please: I'm currently walking down Austin starting by the Fridays area going down towards Ascan, just want to get a grasp on exactly how many hair salons there are; let's see: The Mixed Company salon, Blown Away, Salon Niquel, Savvy Beauty, Dominick's Hair Styling, Queens Nails & Spa, Renegade, Shay's Place, Spectrum, Micciche; wow, that was a full 10 in just a few blocks; then there was the one that just closed across from Micciche, there are a few more on the side streets and on Queens Blvd as well. So I definitely don't understand how this new place could possibly make a go of it. We need more original shops!!

    2. You're welcome! I wish this blog had a spot where we could add new threads since I found out interesting info. and have no where to put it except here. Anyways, with all the stores for rent around I thought I would go on the MLS and see what businesses were for sale that we may not even realize. It turns out Ovo Sodo is trying to sell (229K). I'm not surprised. Although the food is good, the place is not very busy. I can't understand why the owners of Tuscan Hills opened this place just a few blocks away with very similar dishes too, some identical. They even mention in the ad that a competing restaurant (Family Rest.) recently closed and has been generating more business for Ovo Sodo. I don't buy that as I walk by there all the time and it's pretty empty, Portofino is usually busy. It also looks like Forest Hills Hardware is up for sale too. There are a few more places on Metro for sale but I'm hardly over there much so can't comment.
