Two Things We Could Use in Forest Hills

A Make Your Own Salad place. Yes, I'm still hoping one of these opens in Forest Hills. We've come close - I know a major chain was interested in Forest Hills several years back. But still no takers. With Shake Shack, Bareburger and other chains now open on Austin Street, it's obvious there's certainly enough of a demand for a different kind of fast-casual lunch or dinner option in Forest Hills. Why it hasn't happened yet? Who knows. For now, anyone craving the healthy ease and convenience of something like a Chopt or a Just Salad can swing by Natural, where they have a make-your-own salad station, albeit quite awkwardly set up amidst the checkout line.

An indie bookshop: My calls for an indie coffee place resulted in not one but two opening in FoHi, and right across from each other on Austin Street no less. Surely, we can do the same with an indie bookshop? Now that indie bookstores are experiencing a resurgence as consumers realize e-books just don't always cut it, the thousands of readers here in Forest Hills are left with either going to the library, ordering on Amazon, visiting the newly-opened Kew & Willow bookshop in Kew Gardens or venturing over to one of the remaining Barnes & Nobles in Manhattan or somewhere else. But there is simply nothing like having your own local bookshop in your community. It can become a haven for book lovers, hosting author readings and other related events. And how delightful is it to escape a hot summer day by wandering into your local bookstore, and feeling that refreshing AC cool you down as you meander through the aisles, stopping here and there to pick up a book and just escape from the daily grind?

  3. Chopt requires at least 1,000 customers a day to stay alive. The few in Manhattan do well because of the very high density of business workers there. Lucky if Austin St could come up with 200-300 a day. Ever see how quiet Austin St it is on weekdays? A salad shop would have to sell other products to make it there.

    1. I am sure I speak for all of the blog's readers when I tell you what a relief it is to know you spend your lunch hours standing on Austin Street counting how many people walk by. Keep up the good work!

  5. We could definitely use Pret-a-Manger by the 71 Ave area. Paris Baguette has some quick, savory items but Pret is king in that respect. Also, Whole Foods, please!! There's not even one in the entire borough.

  6. I'm still in shock that B&N is gone. Not over it. May never be over it.

Kew + Willow is a gorgeous little shop! I stop by whenever I get the chance, but Lefferts is a little far for my purposes. I'd love for something similar to open within walking distance. Anywhere on Austin would be perfect.

  8. SweetGreen Please :)

I know FH Traditionalists hate the big chains, but moderniztion and upscaling (to an extent) will go a long way in making FH a more vibrant and attractive place to live (already love it.) It is too far form Manhattan to ever have the appeal fo Williamsburg/Astoria for younger folks, but enough residents to actually sustain businesses may be nice? A couple more chains could help in making it a destination to live for mid-tolate twenty folks, not jsut a place to go for concerts.

  10. Rents are too damn high on Austin Street! Cheaper on Queens Blvd or Metro Av. Heard 5 Guys by Trader Joes is going out. Perhaps there? But Panera is nextdoor...

  11. Dying for Sweetgreen to come here! And would love a kids bookstore-slash-activity space. Not a fan of Gymboree.
