Just a Reminder: Contributors Always Wanted

As you may have noticed, the blog has not been updated as regularly as it used to be. We believe it's important to have a neighborhood blog. So, we are once again putting out a reminder that we need contributors!

If you are interested in reporting on what's going on in Forest Hills and the city at large just email edgeofthecity@gmail.com. This is a purely volunteer opportunity - just for people who are into helping to improve our neighborhood.

Anyone who has been a fan of Edge of the City I am sure would agree that the neighborhood has come a very long way in the decade or so since we launched. But we still have a lot of work to do! There's a lot more improvements we can bring to Forest Hills.

Here's just a few:

- I just noticed the cutest little space on one of the side streets off of Ausin that would be perfect for a neighborhood book shop. We really could use one! It would be the icing on the cake for our 'hood.

- Queens Blvd. while improving thanks to its bike path, still is a dreadful eyesore. We've been calling for a while for beautification of this ugly mess. Let's get the city working on it!

- With everyone's local favorite Banter having closed during the pandemic, we could really use some other quality casual independent dining spots with broad menu appeal. Our restaurants have vastly improved in the past 10 years or so, but there's still some big holes in the offerings that are embarrasing, especially considering how many people now spend more time in the 'hood during the work week.

So, what are you waiting for? If you are good with words and love Forest Hills, help contribute to the neighborhood's longest-running -- and I guess, only -- blog. All it takes is sending in a photo or brief article every once in a while. We hope you'll join us soon!

  1. I've been missing the more frequent updates, I won't lie. I'm not much of a writer, but if I can come up with any worthy contributions, I'll offer them up.

There've been a lot of closures recently that have put me in a pretty foul mood. The Rite Aid on Continental is, frankly, kind of a huge loss. I was shocked when I found out about it. I know we still have a CVS across the Blvd, but that Rite Aid had been there literally forever.

I still can't get over Austin Public. It wasn't my favorite neighborhood pub, but there was a lot to love about it. (Stacked is owned and run by the same people, am I correct? I hope they're not in danger of closing as well. They make a very good muffaletta.)

And then there's Oz Boutique. I hadn't shopped there in years, but it's where I bought my prom dress way back when. Lots of memories.

And quite frankly, I know it's been over a year, but I'm still deep in mourning for Banter! My mom and I both loved it there so much, good food, a lovely, cozy atmosphere. It was the one place we could always agree on. And I always thought my extremely Irish grandparents would've loved it there. :)

  3. The book business is in perpetual decline, resorting back to historical trends. The bike lanes aren't an improvement. And while I so miss Banter, New restaurants continue to open.
