Spring Has Sprung!

Happy to say I got the Spring Fever today. And Bryant Park was hopping and looking quite Springy.... Oh, and that last pic is just to remind us that Summer Movie Season officially kicks off in a couple of weeks -- though I have my money on Godzilla. Tired of the Spiderman.

Yes, this is indeed my favorite time of year. A great time to be in The Big Apple.

Summer Movie Season

Regular readers of this blog know I am a huge movie fan. So, it's almost time to start turning my attention to the "Summer Movie Season," which amusingly actually starts around May 1st. Which is absolutely fine with me. The longer they make the summer, the better. It goes by way too quickly anyway, doesn't it?

And speaking of movies, I was a little surprised to see this poster up already outside the Regal Brandon movie theater on Austin St. It's coming out around Thanksgiving! Again, though, fine with me. I loved the books and the first movie in the series, so bring it on!

As for this summer's movies, the main one I am looking forward to so far is the Star Trek movie. I'm sure there'll be others. I just haven't had much time to check lately! I thought the first one J.J. Abrams did was ok. I wasn't blow away by it like some other people were. I guess I'm too loyal to the original series. To me, what made Star Trek special was always the characters and the ideas—the Prime Directive, what a concept!—not the special effects. I just hope the new film is more balanced in that regard.

More on Our Friendly, Neighborhood Spiderman

A reader sent me a link to this article from the NY Times in 2002, when the original Spiderman movie came out:

So, Spider-Man! Brilliant Disguise!; The Real Mild-Mannered Parkers Are in a Superhero's Fictional Lair
In the comics, Peter Parker, the mild-mannered photojournalist who is Spider-Man's alter ego, grew up at 20 Ingram Street, a modest, two-story boarding house run by his Aunt May in the heart of Forest Hills Gardens. The address actually exists and is home to a family named Parker: Andrew and Suzanne Parker, who moved there in 1974, and their two daughters.

Movie Quickies: Early Summer Edition

Here's my mini-reviews, in case you haven't seen these guys yet. The great thing about living in NYC is you can probably still find them playing somewhere. If not, well DVD soon.

Battleship: B+
This kind of got panned. But I thought it was pretty good. Not very memorable, but fun while it lasted. Kind of like chinese food. It actually has a pretty touching ending too, especially if you are a World War 2 buff, like me.

The Avengers: B
Everyone seemed to have just adored this movie. But, please. How many different ways can they blow up New York City? Enough already! That's kind of what I was thinking about 3/4 of the way into this movie.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: B-
Not even sure if I got the name of this right, and to tell you the truth, between the ridiculous heat outside and the margarita I had with lunch, I am too tired to look. This was a mildly diverting film. Very forgettable. Nothing to write home about really. But the cast was damn good, which is why I gave it a B- and not something in the C range.

Prometheus: A+
I've seen this one two times now. The first time in 3D, which I actually thought didn't do justice to this Ridley Scott sci-fi movie. So I went back and saw it again without the 3D. Awesome. A masterpiece sci-fi adventure. One of the best I've seen in a long time. I predict this is one of those that will take its place as an all-time classic.

Men in Black 3: A-
Will Smith is great as usual, as is Josh Brolin. In fact, wow is Josh Brolin great. Oh, and in this one they almost destroy NYC again, but... well, I won't ruin it. It's a really fun summer movie.

Summer Movies

This is one of my favorite times of the year.  Eager movie studios have for some time now expanded the summer blockbuster movie season from the first week of May all the way to Labor Day. And that is fine by me. The more summer, the better, is how I figure it.

Here's a few shots of the posters in the FoHi subway station.

First Summer Movie Trailer

So what if summer 2011 just ended?! It's never too early to start thinking about next summer (my very favorite season, after all)... And here to get you in the mood, the first trailer of Summer 2012! (In which some evil villain does some rather despicable things to our lovely city, I might add.)

More Dinosaurs? Spielberg on Jurassic Park 4

Since it's Friday, that makes it an excellent time for some movie news! My favorite movie news of the week (aside from the news that they will be making 4 movies, count 'em 4, out of my new favorite sci-fi books, The Hunger Games):

Steven Spielberg Brainstorming 'Jurassic Park 4' with Writer Mark Protosevich

Hazy, Hot & Humid

Today's weather has gotten me into a particularly good summer mood. And what says summer better than one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite summer movies of all time. Enjoy!
