Lightning Strike in Forest Hills

Thanks to Carlos for sending in this amazing pic. He took it around 6 p.m. yesterday at Queens Blvd. and 70th Ave. as the lightning struck in the vicinity of Gerard Towers.

A Couple of Ways to Cool Off

With it actually feeling like a genuine New York City summer for a change, we turn our attention to some icy treats. Luckily, Metropolitan Ave. has a couple.

With the Carvel down there having opened, then closed, then, who the hell knows? ...  I, like plenty of other car-less Notherners who don't frequent Metropolitan Area very often, was left confused about the status of one of my favorite childhood haunts. So, for all of you like me who were wondering whether there still is a Carvel in Forest Hills or not, I can happily report there is indeed—and just a short walk down to Metropolitan Ave.

And remember our place to get ices that used to be next to the old Bonfire Grill—Uncle Louie G? Well, that's now located down there as well, sharing a location with Twist It Top It frozen yogurt.

Empire State Building Looking Particularly Art Deco

The setting mid-summer sun cast a particularly delightful sheen on the Empire State Building Friday evening, as seen from 23rd St. and 8th Ave.

Couple of Closings...

Surprised that more people in Forest Hills don't miss the ices shop Uncle Louie G which used to open every summer on Austin St. right next to the Bonfire Grill. Yea, it was a little run down, but the ices and ice cream weren't bad. Anyway, that place looks completely closed, with construction going on inside it.

And then, I come back on vacation and see that the Lady Love Boutique at the corner of 72nd Ave. and Austin St. has closed. Surprised no one had contacted me about since it was one of the more eccentric-looking shops on Austin St. and in business for quite a few years.

Summer Storm

Some impressive lightning just to the south of Forest Hills tonight as the week-long heat wave came to an end...

Heat Wave Moon

Dreadfully hot, but the moon over Forest Hills tonight is quite beautiful...

The Heat is On

Temps are expected to be in the mid-90s all week, actually feeling more like over 100 degrees because of the humidity. This will be one of the longest heat waves we've had in the city in quite some time. So this is a good week to take things slow - the frantic pace of city life doesn't jive well with temperatures more fitting for a sleepy town in the deep south.

Today at the Forest Hills Greenmarket

If you are brave enough to weather the horrible heat and humidity out there today, here's a little update on what's available at our Greenmarket today. The toll the weather is taking was apparent, by the way: there was no live music today. Also, Ronnybrook Dairy had only a limited amount of stuff on sale because of the heat.

But, on a positive note, the Summer Fruits are finally here!

Our Greenmarket is open until 3 p.m. today, but I wouldn't be surprised if the vendors close up shop a bit early...

Saturday Night on Restaurant Row

Here's some pics I took last Saturday night on Forest Hills' Restaurant Row (70th Road). It's just great to see things really hopping in our neighborhood, especially during these summer weekends. I was especially impressed with how lively Vanilla Sky was on this warm summer evening, just the type of place people gravitate to during the Dog Days of Summer to cool off, as you can see from the picture.. You may not love frozen yogurt, and you may think we're over-saturated with fro-yo places right now (and you may be right), but you can't argue that: 1) it was a really smart move to open Vanilla Sky on that particular corner, and 2) they did a great job pulling it off. It's a really fun and inviting place they built, especially on a warm summer night...

Hazy, Hot & Humid

Today's weather has gotten me into a particularly good summer mood. And what says summer better than one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite summer movies of all time. Enjoy!
