Brooklyn vs. Queens: A Comedy Throwdown

Root for your favorite borough at Brooklyn vs. Queens: A Comedy Throwdon at Gleason’s Gym in DUMBO

On Saturday, October, 1 at 9pm comedians Liz Simons, Selena Coppock, and Sue Funke are producing a show at Gleason's Gym in DUMBO titled,  "Brooklyn vs. Queens: A Comedy Throwdown." The premise is to have similar standup comedians from either borough perform back-to-back. The match ups include: Brooklyn Gay vs. Queens Gay, Native Brooklyn vs. Native Queens, Blonde Brooklyn vs. Blonde Queens and, of course the girl comic-on-girl comic action of  Brooklyn Chick vs. Queens Chick. Borough pride is on the line and the comedy brawls will be intense and hilarious!

The Queensboro Bridge Art Contest

The Queensboro Bridge Art Contest is the LIC Art Open's (licartsopen.org) invitation to the students of Queens, ages 5-18, to memorialize the Queensboro Bridge through art. Thanks to the efforts of curator Alyssa Ratkewitch and the Queens Paideia School, art
teachers and parents throughout the borough have mobilized young artists to produce more than 1,500 breathtaking submissions. The result is an unprecedented exhibition of color, imagination, poetry, possibility, and joy.

An awards ceremony for winning submissions representing 4 age categories will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 2:30 p.m. at the Street Festival on 22nd St., between 43rd and 44th Avenues. Council member Jimmy Van Bramer will be on hand to present awards
and personally congratulate the winners (who will be notified in advance).

An exhibition of ALL of the works will be held at the LIC Art Center on May 21& May 22, noon to 6 p.m. Please stop by to view this marvelous display of youthful creativity as well as a documentary about the bridge produced by Queens Paideia’s students especially
for this event.

No, not them... Jet Blue will be hosting a special day of tree planting here in town to help us recover from the tornado:

Make New York City a little greener

JetBlue and New York Restoration Project (NYRP) are teaming up once again to do One Thing That's Green! Join us on April 9, 2011 as we plant hundreds of trees in Forest Hills, Queens!

In September, tornadoes ripped through Queens leaving once lush areas looking vacant. Trees are a vital part of the environment, especially in New York City, and by recommendation of the City of New York, JetBlue and NYRP will partner to revitalize MacDonald Park and surrounding areas.

Bring your friends and family for an exciting day of outdoor activities that encourage active living! Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and all volunteers will receive a One Thing That's Green branded t-shirt. There will be activities for the entire family throughout the day.

Register now and check back for updates in the coming weeks. All volunteers must register and complete a waiver. Young adults ages 14 to 17 must have a signed waiver from a parent or guardian to participate. Kids younger than 14 are welcome with an adult and they'll be plenty of activities for everyone.

Do your One Thing That's Green! Together with our partners NYRP, 106.7 Lite FM, 103.5 KTU and Power 105.1, JetBlue will make a lasting difference on the community and continue to evolve our commitment to greening the Big Apple.
