Now we are hearing that
Chipotle will probably be coming to Forest Hills, in the old Martha's Bakery space on Austin. A commenter had written about that here months ago and the information now seems more reliable so I am tentatively reporting it.
I believe this will be the first Chipotle in Queens. If I'm wrong, let me know.

It is definitely true. They have signed the lease.
ReplyDeleteSweeeeeet!!! Love that place!
ReplyDeleteThis would be great; but I don't think the space satisfies their basic requirements. See CMG website for full details of Urban location requirements.
ReplyDeleteK
They will be coming into the combined space where the old Martha's was and the empty pizza store space next to it.
DeleteI am not the biggest fan... but I still like it more than Marinellas
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see a Panera on Austin Street! And while I'm begging for chains (so sad), I'd love to see a Taco Bell, KFC and/or Wendy's instead of another fro-yo place.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you want a Panera? That's the last thing I would want given we have one of the greatest indie bread places in the entire city, if not possibly the country. Jeez.
DeleteI mean, it's one of the few things we have in Forest Hills that other places don't have, and you want to bring in a national chain to compete with it? I just don't get it.
DeleteI agree, and frankly, I think Panera is way overrated. And though I have to say that I do enjoy some Taco Hell once in a while, its not what I want to see on Austin Street. We used to have a Wendys..now a Bank of America. I hope some of those banks close.
DeleteNo Taco Bell, kfc or wendys please.
Deletenot to sound too snobby, but the patrons for these would be annoying to have lingering around Austin...
Kfc's and taco bells are primarily located in ghettoes. I do not want that here. Also, all three were located in the area and all three closed so they would probably fail if the tried again. Please leave the greasy, lowlife attracting fast food to other neighborhoods. We don't need that garbage here.
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY.
Deleteplease no panera's, no kfc no taco bells- so tired of chain fast food in this neighborhood - I guess if we are stuck with yet another one chipotle is the best option
ReplyDelete"Tentatively reporting" lol. Very funny.
ReplyDeleteNot surprised by Chipotle.
ReplyDeleteChipotle is a big organization and has nice signage and keeps up their properties nice. Will improve the neighborhood and be here to stay. Basic mexican selections, nothing fancy. Plus that food really isn't that good for you all the time.
Chipotle does have nice interiors and does have fresh food. Marinellas was garbage that should never have come in.

ReplyDeleteI agree completely. Taco Bell and KFC were located on the North side of Forest Hills however I believe they have since gone out of business at that location.
McDonalds still exists here and is garbage and yet still is packed even though I won't go there and still gets loads of deliveries each and every day.
Chipotle isn't that bad for you once in awhile.
We seem to have a reemergence of upscaling the area with better places.
DeleteAgora Taverna, Chipotle, Bareburger, that new upscale wine bar which I don't know if it opened yet or not.
It will be nice if one day Tbone Diner space could get knocked down and rebuilt and Biu Bello is still open in that restaurant space however.
Europan wasn't a bad place as I used to get quick healthy foods to go there like organic ice tea and panini's which were fine but supposedly some of the other foods were bad. Perhaps the makeover will upscale the place and hopefully they put more thought and attention to quality of product.
Food quality in Forest Hills is getting better with some decent finds.
This is great news. I think Chipotle is great or what it is. Their food actually tastes good, unlike Taco Bell, which tastes like it was made from Old El Paso taco kits.
ReplyDeleteI am a little surprised at this, since, as a previous commentator said, Chipotle's business model looks for locations that will have a very heavy lunch rush. Which means they look for locations near a lot of offices and the like. While there are some offices nearby, and that little private college. I cannot imagine huge lunch rushes. But I assume they know what they are doing. Otherwise, I am happy, I love Chipotle, and it is very healthy if you do not add cheese and sour creme.
ReplyDeleteAustin Street has constant flow of traffic which never ends. Cars, buses, trucks, people walking on the street.
ReplyDeleteRestaurants have customers. Plus population density is increasing not decreasing and people are taking over previous unused spaces for office buildings.
Chipotle should do well at this location.
True but parking is the issue. I don't mind dropping $10.00 for parking if I'm spending $150.00 on dinner. But for lunch, no way would I pay to park.
DeleteK
Chipotle isn't anything fancy, just mass produced decent quality basic mexican food with minimal selections.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed much healthier and better than Taco Bell.
Have you actually ever been in a Chipotle?? While its not fancy (who said it was?) It is very good quality, fresh ingredients cooked fresh from scratch every day.
DeleteLove Chipolte. We order lunch online at work and send an intern over to pick it up. He loves going in and seeing 50 people on line and walking up to the pick-up area and everything is ready when promised. You'll never get that at Death Bell; because I believe . Chipolte does a better job hiring and training it's staff.

With Marianellas gone and with the chinese mexican or other mexican places further out and with the mexican place that went bust where the strip of restaurants is, there was a void filled and Chipotle realized it was time to come in, people have requested it in this neighborhood before.
ReplyDeleteSo it isn't surprising at all. Chipotle makes much better usage of that existing space.
Chipotle built out most of the highly profitable locations already and now has to expand further for economic growth and Forest Hills was one of those markets which wasn't prime before. The conditions here made it one of those markets they will expand to.
ReplyDeleteChipotle isn't bad. Locations have nice interiors and seating. Healthier option than Pizza as well which was there before.
Chipotle also can afford to pay the higher rents and will be a more sustainable tenant. I don't see how once Chipotle comes in it winds up shutting down. It is good because it solidifies the space.
Some of Chipotles offers are really bad for you however nutritionally. However you can choose healthier options.
ReplyDeleteanyone who is excited to have another fast food option.. which there already are so many of in FH isnt worried about whats healthy and whats not. No one has to eat fast food and if they care what they put into their body they do not.
DeleteSadness. It would have been nice to see another "real" (non-fast-food) option open up on our beloved Austin Street. Damn it. I guess there is a downside to our 'hood finally gaining some attention from the rest of the world. Waffle truck, good. Chipotle, bummer.
ReplyDeleteIf the rents were not so high, maybe an up and coming business could work out on Austin, but the reality is not there.
DeleteFranchises can afford the high rent, they win over the mom m pops.
I like Chipotle but I see it as more of a place where I could grab lunch rather than a place I would go for dinner - not even for take out.
ReplyDeleteA mexican restaurant would have been nice..I would always rather have a new restaurant then a new fast food joint
ReplyDeleteRight, another Mexican restaurant, to go with the other two right nearby. Because God knows we need many, many Mexican restaurants. That's indeed what we have been lacking on Austin St... Have you ever been to Chipotle?
DeleteIn fact, I have an idea: let's just make all of Austin St. one series of Mexican restaurants and rename the neighborhood, Mexican Restaurant Hills.
DeleteI wanted SHAKE SHACK! Oh well...
ReplyDeleteDrake I forgot there was 5 Burros and that Garcias place...sorry!
ReplyDeleteYes been to Chipotle but as a general rule I dont eat fast food nor do I love any kind of chain place opening up on whats supposed to be an upscale neighborhood/shopping area like Austin St
Firstly, why do you believe that chains stores and "upscale" are mutually exclusive? You've never been to an upscale chain store? There are tons of them. Walk around any of the posh Manhattan neighborhoods and I am sure you will find most have some chain stores.
DeleteAlso, where is it written that Austin St. is "supposed to be an upscale neighborhood/shopping area"? It certainly doesn't fit the bill today. Some of it is, some of it is not. There are plenty of establishments on Austin which by no means cater to upscale clientele, but more of a middle and even in some cases, a working class demographic. Oh, I can even think of a few restaurants on Austin that are more fit for the Martians NASA is currently trying to find than the human residents of Forest Hills.
because they are not putting upscale chain stores on austin st..fast food is not upscale ..not even chipotle
ReplyDeleteforest hills is still relatively clean, quiet and safe..if you want it to be more like steinway st then keep encouraging the cheap fast food eats and accessory stores ;)
I'd love Austin to be more like Steinway Street in some respects - such as the coffee spots and restaurant offerings. Sure.
DeleteActually the good coffee and restaurant spots are NOT on Steinway ...Steinway is loaded with chain fast food, accessories, cheap clothes and shoes ;)
DeleteI second that. Why are there so many bland eateries in FH? We have the money to support better food places. Why should Astoria have all the fun?
ReplyDeleteI would love FH to be more like Astoria food wise but no one seems to be attracted to the FH area..except for chains
Deletewait, enough about the food. WHY in the world do we have so many cheap dress shops? seriously, you will look like a cheap tranny if you shop in most of those stores. not only is the visual merchandising atrocious but the names/signage are tacky ("Magic Corsets" - wtf is so magical?) and it's wasting valuable space!
ReplyDeleteeveryone in FoHi realizes the potential. austin street AND metropolitan avenue both have history and the community to support a thriving arts/restaurant/entertainment scene. there are so many existing businesses that just need proper management and direction. i did a tour of the tennis club and let me tell you, that place is 1) epic 2) going to shut its door if they don't rebrand the space to attract an audience that's not about to die (age). Lord knows I'm not paying $2,500 to bring a friend there three times a year to hang out with a lot of pear-shaped 80 year olds.
agreed- nicer clothing stores would be fabulous- magic corsets is a great store and has been there for ages. I hope they continue to do well and stay put!
ReplyDeleteMust agree! The name is bad but they really know how to fit boobs which Victorias secret does not!
Deleteagreed- far better service in that regard
DeleteOne of the stores I would love to see go would be that giant eye sore discount clothing store right on continental ave. What an awful place....Forest hills should not be the place for these types of stores.
ReplyDeleteHow bout we sh*tcan everything on Continental. Nothing but chain stores and a lot of garbage on the street. Talk about the cesspool of the neighborhood. Starbucks, Radio Shack, Dunkin, Citibank, McDonalds, Chase, and on and on. I avoid that street at all costs.
DeleteI do not know what you are all talking about - Astoria this - Astoria that. Well guys I was in Astoria - and Forest Hills is beginning to look a lot like Astoria - Hookah Lounge here, Hookah Lounge there, Bar here, bar there. Cheap Dress Shop Here. Austin Street is simply not as LONG as Steinway. The Forest Hills community does not support the shops it has. Everyone always complains -too expensive this, too expensive that. The Value store is about all you are going to get. Really, that little spot Marthas has next to it is over $15,000 per month. Yes, $15,000 per month. Keep supporting the waffle truck - Martha's from Astoria will be gone too. Keep supporting all the street vendors - more and more are coming. Soon we will have a dedicated hot dog stand, two or three nut stations, more vendors selling their wears on the street. Oh, then what do you have - Canal Street. Yeah, Manhattan has come to Queens. Try appreciating the businesses. Those of you who think management is the problem - Boy you have some growing up to do. Try dealing with the NYC Health Department, Consumer Affairs, NYS Worker's Comp, Credit Card companies, counterfeiters, consumers who cancel their credit card purchases - claiming they did not have the $325.69 meal they ate. Yeah, you all think you are sooo nice. You are wrong. In Astoria - the people are far more civil
ReplyDeleteMarthas isnt going anywhere and I hope the Waffle truck stays and attracts more vendors...would be nice to get a decent falafal in FH..something you can find easily in Astoria
ReplyDeleteFood wise Astoria rocks..so many different options and the rents are not low there either.
What makes Astoria unpleasant is the overpriced shitbox apartments- which is exactly why we moved from there to this culinary desert/fast food chain paradise which is FH LOL the apartments in FH, KG and Rego Park blow away anything that can be found in Astoria
I think that space is small for a chipotle -- or however you spell it. And chains are fine. Not all of us can afford wine bars and the natural all the time. The waffle truck has been a great addition to the area!
