Rumors and Happenings

Just a few tidbits people have either commented about, or I've seen. Various rumors and possibilities and stuff still to be sorted out:

1) Very surprised to hear that Moca Asian Bistro on Restaurant Row was shut down by the health department recently. I have been leaning towards Jade recently for my Asian fusion fare, but this was always a close second. I especially liked their boneless bbq spare ribs. They even made it onto my Recommended Restaurants list. Hopefully, they'll reopen.

2) And while I'm on Restaurant Row, hard to believe that someone hasn't snatched up the former Liang's space there. I mean if you are anyone who wants to own a restaurant, it's one of the best locations in Forest Hills, possibly all of Queens. Thousands of people come to that street every weekend to eat from all over the Borough, Long Island, and the rest of the City. Hard to see how a good restaurant wouldn't thrive big-time in that location.

3) A couple of things from comments here: a) Apple store is the rumor that refuses to die. The latest had it going into the Men's Warehouse location on Austin, and b) Lucille Roberts will be closing. Can't vouch for either of those, just telling you what others have commented about here in the past couple of months. By the way, how much longer do you think Barnes & Noble has? I used to love browsing in there, but have to admit I haven't done so in months since I've gotten my Kindle. I now browse electronically, virtually, whatever.

4) Crimes in The Gardens. A friend sent me some photos this morning of a beautiful new car stripped apparently overnight of all its tires. I'm not posting the pics because I don't want to invade the victim's privacy. But what chutzpah these thieves have, so brazen. The car in the photo is clumsily lifted up off the street by pieces of wood, quite precariously by the way.

  2. Have not kept up with the rumors. But I was hoping the story last week about the TGIF's in New Jersey serving adulterated alcohol would have had some negative blow-back on the one in Forest Hills. Wishful thinking, I guess

  3. I was curios and Googled MoCa, as I knew they had other locations. But I could not find the listing for the one that was in Manhattan, they are still in the Five Towns.

Well, I never liked the stubby cocktail glasses that they served their Martini's in. Some people just don't understand that hardware/glassware has a specific function and was designed a certain way for a reason.

    Good ridance

    2. Right, very odd, especially considering who the last tenants were there. Kinda feels like an episode of Bates Motel.

  6. Best location in all of Queens? Sounds like you've had too much Chinese food with MSG.

    1. Why not? A whole street of nothing but restaurants, where else is that in Queens with this proximity to both the City and Long Island? If you're thinking of opening a restaurant, kind of a no-brainer.

  8. I had my car stripped of all 4 tires last year on Burns st near Union. Car was also perched precariously on 2 bricks (one for each side of the chassis), destroying the undercarriage! Cops actually interrogated me when they arrived since tires are stolen and sold on the black market for street racing. Moral of the story: buy tire locks.

  9. I'm pretty sure Lucille Roberts isn't closing anytime soon. I'm a member there and it gets pretty packed. Plus, they just did a bunch of (minor) upgrades.

As for Barnes and Nobles, I browse pretty frequently but tend to do any buying around the holidays (when I haven't left myself enough time for things to be shipped). What I'd love to see, and maybe this is something that the spot Common used to occupy can become, is a nice spot for coffee/laptop browsing. You know, Starbucks but not.

Maybe we could get a good bbq place in the spot on restaurant row. Or maybe, a really good Italian place. Am I missing something? I feel like Forest Hills doesn't really have one.
