Good Day NY Visits Forest Hills

Our three new gastropubs continue to get a huge amount of attention:

  1. Drake, lately your posts have been on point! Good job man. I know we don't always agree on some aspects of your blog, but it's one of the perks of making it public, huh? Anyway, does blogspot offer a way to be notified when you post new content? I know some blogs offer a way to subscribe via email and wonder if there's a way to do it here too. Thanks!

    1. D,
Yes, scroll down to the bottom of the page and enter your email address where it says Follow By Email on the right. You will get alerted once a day if the site is updated..

And the fact is there has just been a lot more local stuff going on. I still will interject my thoughts on stuff outside of The Hills — and inside — when I feel strongly about something. But the more news there is about the neighborhood the less time I have to do that with all the other stuff going on in my so called life.

  2. Hey, look at that, there it is! Thanks Drake. Nice tidbit for other's who don't scroll so far down the page.

Yea, Forest Hills has definitely picked up in speed. And most if not all the changes are fantastic. There has been one issue my wife and I have noticed lately...and that's foot traffic. One of the great aspects of not living in Astoria of Dumboo is that the area offered a mix of suburb and city living. Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the foot (and car) traffic is getting out of hand in the neighborhood. What was once a peaceful stroll down Austin street is turning into a midtown Manhattan mess during peak times. It's great in the morning, especially when we walk to the bakery to pick up fresh bread, but try walking down 108th at 1pm and my blood pressure rises three fold. Is it just me? Is my age finally showing? Damn, and we don't even have kids yet :)

  3. I remember walking my (small) dog on Austin street back in the early 80s and there was so much foot traffic we had to pick him up.

I also remember mobs of people on Austin Street back in the 70s, when we used to head this way from Jamaica Estates to hit the record store.

Honestly, I think traffic flow ebb and flows over time. Austin street still doesn't seem nearly as congested to me now as it did when I was a teen.

    1. Nice spot. Another 15 seconds at Station House would have evened things out.
Maybe they will come back when BWW opens. Not.

  4. Had the pan seared salmon at banter with water. Place was not crowded and waitress service was nothing terrific.

Food was tasty but portions were on the smaller side. I wouldn't call this place anything exciting.

Station House seems like a good bar with food options across from the LIRR. I would agree that it is much better than what was previously there. It beats having a bank AND a low end mexican food place. Instead it actually provides people with drinks and some decent food.

The Flying pig on the other hand gets poor reviews even though it has garnered attention.

And the media must have been in a slow news cycle for it to upsell 3 Forest Hills gastropubs which aren't anything special. 2 of the places are decent for the area and make sense. One replaced another poorly rated place with something which on the surface seems better but isn't.

  5. Interesting that Ray Kelly's son was on Fox though. NYPD has done a good job here keeping crime down.

But face it Queens is still a lesser place than other more desirable parts of the city where much more and better things are happening.

  6. I find it amusing that as they pan the streets while switching from The Flying Pig to Station House, they show the owner of Status Quo (formerly Network Cafe) walking down the street.
