Queens Bully Taking Shape

Thanks to Bud for the pic! I can't wait for this place to open. I was wondering why the place made Zagat's list of most anticipated Spring restaurant openings, so I did a little digging online and found out that one of the owners is the son of the founder of the Baluchi's Indian restaurant chain. Queens Bully, if it lives up to expectations, has the potential to bring new energy to what is a rather run-down part of Forest Hills, that stretch along Queens Blvd. from Ascan to Kew Gardens. There have already been some notable openings along that strip, but the entire thing is in need of a makeover of some kind. In any case, look for throngs of newcomers to venture down that way once Queens Bully opens.

Queens Bully Gastropub BBQ Restaurant Opening Soon

Zagat's reports this will be opening in the former site of Baluchi's on Queens Blvd.
A big thanks to Bud for letting us know...

From Zagat's "47 Most Anticipated NYC Spring Restaurant Openings of 2017"

Queens
Projected opening: April
Rohan Aggarwal and Suraj Patel will open their debut restaurant, Queens Bully, in Forest Hills. Named after the iconic Queens Boulevard, the gastropub will focus on comfort food and barbecue inspired by the diverse cultures that exist throughout the borough. Items, like smoked jerk chicken and Corona pork tacos, will feature locally sourced vegetables and herbs grown on the premises. To drink, there will be local craft beers and wines as well as bourbon-, rye- and whiskey-centric cocktails.

Putting Lipstick on a Pig

That headline was contributed by a friend of mine....And it is kinda lipsticky isn't it?

And the photo below was contributed by a reader. Where would this blog be without all of you? It is indeed a community effort. Anyway, the soon-to-be Austin Public, former Flying Pig's makeover continues...

When the Pig Flies

Just thought I'd put in a few words for another really good place here in Forest Hills, The Flying Pig. It's another place I tried early on, wasn't blown away by because I thought its menu was too limited, and then just went back and absolutely loved. Between the enormously expanded menu, the really good food - everything we had we really liked - and the upbeat Friday night vibe when we went, The Flying Pig just rocketed its way to become one of my favorite places in FoHi.

The soup and reuben sandwich are off of the special St. Patrick's Day menu The Flying Pig had this weekend. Both were excellent. The roast chicken is from their regular menu.

Jazz Tuesdays

For the reader asking about "Jazz Thursdays" - I don't know anything about that, but I do know about Jazz Tuesdays...

By the way, speaking of The Flying Pig, I was able to confirm over the weekend that its head chef, Martin Forde, used to be the chef at my favorite local restaurant, Mood in Kew Gardens, which, unfortunately—and rather inexplicably— suddenly closed down a year or so ago much to my bitter disappointment. So I was absolutely thrilled to find out that he's now right here in Forest Hills! And guess what? Serving up the same amazing roasted chicken dish he did at Mood (pictured below) — I tried it on Saturday  — along with many other culinary delights at our new Pig.

A little more digging turned up, thanks to a story about The Flying Pig in DNAinfo.com, that Forde has also worked at The Russian Tea Room and other Manhattan restaurants.

Brunching at Banter

The fare from a recent Sunday brunch at Banter. Pictured below are a simple omelette and their Irish breakfast. I really enjoyed it, as with all the times I've been to this new place. I especially liked the service - exceedingly friendly.

Village Voice Station House Article Says it All...

Doesn't it really capture the essence of our 'hood? Great article!

Forest Hills Station House Now Serving Beer and Whiskey in Queens
"After all, if someone tells you their grandmother lives in Queens, odds are Forest Hills is where she's raising hell--and she's doing it all before 10 p.m."
Ok, so maybe it's a little dated now that we have music concerts here!

Station House Pizza

Had a chance to visit one of my favorite new places in Forest Hills, Station House, again over the weekend. I tried their cheese pizza — fluffy dough, tangy sauce, really, really good. Another winner. So far I've had their chicken wings and pizza and a couple of beers and plan to keep working my way through the rest of their excellent menu. Oh, and the beer this time: a Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing:
