Vanilla Sky's Opening Day

Here are some photos from yesterday's opening of Vanilla Sky, Forest Hills' new cafe/frozen yogurt place at the corner of Austin St. and 70th Road (Restaurant Row). I have to admit I'm not much of a frozen yogurt connoisseur and don't get very excited about it (see my Tweets), but I liked their's—the flavors I tried tasted more like regular ice cream and less like yogurt. And the place is really really nice. Very modern and sleek, with great touches. I especially liked the fact that they also sell other things like sandwiches, coffee and smoothies (see their menu below). So, Forest Hills has more than just another frozen yogurt shop in Vanilla Sky. We have a full-blown cafe that's really cool and fun, and with outdoor seating to boot.

A great summery touch - enjoy your fro-yo and other treats in their "green" outdoor seating area

Loved their cool-looking furniture. Very modern.

They had a variety of gourmet sandwiches, sodas and waters.

  1. I went yesterday. It was as boring as expected. And none of those sandwiches are made-to-order, so they were sitting out all day. Delicious!

  2. This place is great!!! There I am in your picture actually! Haha!! Loved the yogurt and the sleek look!! Nice refreshing yogurt with sandwiches to go also! The staff was nice and helpful as well!! I'm psyched about this!!......
On another note over the weekend we stopped into flying pig.. we walked past the owner when we walked in the guy couldnt even crack a smile! That should have been the sign to leave, however there was someone singing music which got me to stay for 1. The music was not great but it was live music in Forest Hills which I have been looking for! I dont love the small tv's or lack of tvs.. and upon leaving the owner was arguing with some patrons in front of the entire restaurant, actually in front of the man singing. awkward. they need to step it up.
sorry for the rant but i had to mention it!!
    Cheers to Vanilla Sky tho!!

  3. Who serves frozen yogurt by the oz? That's just idiocy! Just have prices for small, medium, large, instead of making your customers calculate their orders before even ordering.

    1. The answer to your question, at least in Manhattan, is virtually everyone. The big chain is16 Handles, but there is also Flavaboom, Yooglers, Off the Wall, etc., all in walking distance from my office. Oh, and also a place called Red Mango. Some people, myself included, like to have control over how much we order , what flavors we mix , and how much of what toppings we put on.

    2. OMG, seriously? I LOOOOOVE buying by the oz. Give you so much flexibility for how many toppings, yogurt, etc. Choice is key!

    3. That's what scoops are for...

    4. You can have a standard scoop size but it depends who's scooping. Also, no one "scoops" soft serve frozen yogurt, it's not gelato. Having sizes is the best way to rip off a customer (well, not "rip off" more like save on the owner's costs)

  4. Can they still be considered a cafe if all their sandwiches are premade?

  5. Europan also had premade panini's. I ordered them before, never got sick from them.

As long as the sandwich's are refrigerated, it should be fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

    1. Most have made-to-order sandwiches, but not pre-made.

    2. Even La Boulangerie sandwiches are pre-made; and Subway's are made to order - what odd nitpick direction are we heading in?

    3. La Boulangerie at least makes them on-premise. It doesn't appear Vanilla Sky does.

  8. Vanilla Sky is rated better than Europan. They were well received in Queens.

  9. Hopefully Vanilla Sky will carry more food items. But it looks like it is better than Europan which did not run the business well.

  10. Boring. I wish it was a French eatery, we need more of those.

  12. What time do they open?

  13. No expiration dates on the sandwiches?

  14. the sandwiches are delivered daily to us for the time being. if we do see that there is a big enough demand in the area for sandwiches, we will consider making the sandwiches on the premises.

  15. Twist It Top It on Metropolitan seems to be just like this, but it's only DIY FroYo/Toppings.

  16. I love this place, however on my receipt it said $.59 per oz. I don't know if its some kind of scheme that their are applying after a few weeks of good business. Other wise, I love the place. It is a beautiful comforting place that I love very much. It is so far the best frozen yogurt I've tasted. Credits to the male worker with bluish greenish eyes. He is a very nice man.
