Something's Gotta Give?

Just wondering, now that there are finally a bunch of really good places to eat in central Forest Hills, I wonder if the countdown is on until some of those sad, legacy places that managed to survive until now due to virtually no competition start falling by the wayside?

The awesome shrimp salad in a pita I had at Banter for lunch yesterday. They're only charging $11 for it as one of their many delicious lunch specials. I'd pay twice as much for it personally, it's that good. (But shhh!, don't tell them!)

Here's their lunch special menu, or most of it anyway:

  1. As an Italian, I really would love to have Pasta del Giorno and Portofino go. I hate to wish bad things to someone's business, but these places are awful. (Although portofino pizza isn't bad) They take up so much prime real estate, I always fantasize what could be there insead. (A nice french bistro, a coffee place, cocktail lounge....)

  2. portofino does a lot of business with big parties of ppl not from Forest Hills, so they ain't going anywhere. Anybody know how Jack & Nellies are doing? THey were packed when they first opened, but that was before all these new places came in.

    1. Yeah you are right. It's usually crowded for their buffet brunch too - ugh, gross....

    2. Jack & Nellies is doing great.

They started adding larger plates as specials and made it official last week by re-vamping their menu to include both large and small plates. Some of the large plate offerings include Seared Salmon, Hanger Steak, the Jack & Nellie Burger, and Seasonal Vegetable Risotto.

Smart move on their part, although I still love the small plates/tapas. Their cheese board is one of the best values in town.

They continue to draw a nice crowd in spite of the new restaurant openings. They also are drawing a pretty nice Brunch crowd.

IMO, Jack & Nellies has a very distinct feel over other options in the neighborhood.

      For me, it's a keeper.

    1. Agreed. They have a dress in the window that I've been wanting to buy. I pass by the store daily and nothing. There's never anyone in their.

      Ridiculous.

  4. Ahhh, the always-empty tie store. One of the biggest mysteries of FoHi! Money laundering? LOL

    1. But at least the tie store opens. Aminence never seems to be open, though I have seen a woman in there a few times, opening boxes.

    2. So many of Austin Street stores are long time fronts for various mob activities that the question should really be which stores aren't fronts? The answer: the chain stores.

    3. Which ones are fronts for the "mob"?

  8. Big shout out to Eve who works at Jack & Nellie's. She's a terrific bartender, very friendly. The small plates are quite tasty, didn't realize they are now offering larger ones. I hear they also have a nice brunch - will have to try it soon.
