My favorite new place is Keuka Kafe. Went to the Grill for lunch last week. The food tastes very very good but they seem (at least at lunch time) to struggle with cost/portion size. Prices were in line with other restaurants in the area for lunch but we both left hungry, and got 3 servings of bread.... Dinner prices seem higher than most. We'll give it a shot for dinner though.
I think La Boulangerie is by far the best restaurant in our area. It is pure quality with their fresh baked breads and pastries, soups and quiches and has a really warm and inviting atmosphere. I can't believe it took me this long to find this place!! The line on Christmas Eve for fresh baguette was a clear sign that this place is a true Forest Hills gem!
I'm going to go with Banter for the sole reason that I've frequented that location more than any other single, new establishment that opened in 2013. I agree with La Boulangerie being a neighborhood gem, but truth is I don't eat that much bread and/or baked goods. I really have enjoyed all meals I've had at Station House, but I don't find it a comfortable place to eat (likely due to the fact that I'm outside of their target age group).
How about least favorite places? The C-Town on Austin Street seems to get scummier each time I go inside and the employees are beyond incompetent. Also, that place that (far as I can tell) silkscreens people's names onto t-shirts and the like? That occupies the space where Homefront Decor used to be? I can't even imagine a bigger waste of real estate. Has anyone ever even seen a customer go in or come out of there? Because I haven't.
Can we get rid of the C-Town and the Organic Grocery next door, and combine the two as a legitimate supermaket? I'm tired of paying for grocery delivery from Peapod because I can't find what I need at either store.
What organic grocery? Are you referring to Natural? They are not an all organic store. And while I don't care for Natural, and rarely buy anything there, there is no denying that they do amazing business and surely will not be closing anytime soon.
Let me just put my two cents in and then I swear I won't contribute to any more negativity!
The last time I bought anything at C Town was around 2 years ago. It was an ordinary day, I purchased about one bag's worth of stuff, I left, and then, as I was walking down Ascan one of the employees came running after me, screaming that I had shoplifted and they had it on video and they were going to call the police. It was humiliating. I went back to the store and dug out my receipt. Everything was accounted for. A woman who looked like she's never smiled once in her life wordlessly searched through my bag, but there weren't any stolen items in it. Finally they had to let me go.
I never went back. I'm 38 years old, I've lived in FH for over ten years, I really do not appreciate being treated like a teenage shoplifter.
Banter is my favorite. There food is only a 6 but its a great neighborhood place. Station house has much better food but some of their draft prices are ridiculous ($9 for a 10oz draft? c'mon). Flying Pig is a fun place to go on a fri night and drink as well. Never had a full meal there b/c of the portion size/price.
also, i had posted here earlier that an Italian place was taking over the former Status Quo/Network but I was wrong. It will be a seafood restaurant opening in February.
This was my first year in FH (moved last December) so a lot of places were new to me (Nick's, 5 Burro, etc). Favorite new place is Station House. Love that I could go once a week with a completely different beer menu and have enjoyed almost everything I've eaten there. Least favorite was Flying Pig, I went in with high hopes and was extremely disappointed.
Many complain about C-town as do I, but the 2 key food supermarkets in our area aren't any better. Why can't a real supermarket like stop n shop take over one already? I feel bad for those without cars, and the elderly, who have to put up with sup-bar quality food at ridiculously high prices.
To avert this conversation from endless discussion about that terrible C-Town (If people stopped patronizing it, it would've closed already): List of restaurants/bars that opened in 2013 in Forest Hills in an almost chronological order (I might miss a few): Keuka Kafe Banter Station House Flying Pig Buffalo Wild Wings Sushi Place across from Bareburger (forgot the name) Hive Thai Old Siam Pride Twist and Smash'd The Grill
Polluting this promising thread with rants about C-Town or raves about Boulangerie (It's just a bakery, people, other neighborhoods have them on every block!) is silly.
thanks for list. whether they are our favorites or not, it's good to see places that are new and changes being made. competition is the best cure for our local "eating" and dining
Banter. The food is good, they are welcoming, comfortable to go on your own. Great Happy Hour and music. Heard great things about Station House, but really for their target audience. Pysched for the new 7-11, great option for essentials, without having to go Key Food!
I am glad that Pride opened up. And I am rooting for its success!
ReplyDeleteBanter!
ReplyDeleteAny Reviews on "the grill"? It's been open for over a month and I haven't heard anything.
ReplyDeleteThe new Mr. Vino's & Station House. Basically a tie. But both bring fantastic beer to the neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid to say their names out loud, lest they become the next things to get shut down. :)

ReplyDeleteAgreed! Their pain au chocolate is divine!
DeleteAfter 2.5 years, are they really considered "new"?
DeleteLa Boulangerie hands down. Even if they are not the "newest" they are amazing!
DeleteI like La Boulangerie for their baguettes, but would like some recommendations for whats amazing and delicious to eat, help me out, thanks!

ReplyDeleteThe people who work at C Town are incredibly rude and nasty. I used to live in the building right next door and I still refused to shop there.

Prediction: C-Town will close in 2014. Trade Fair will take it over.
ReplyDeleteC-Town is so filthy IMO it needs to be completely gutted before becoming any other business, supermarket or not.

ReplyDeleteThe Flying Pig! They're not perfect, but their pulled pork is amazing. Even my grandfather loves it and he's VERY hard to please.
ReplyDeleteI like EuroWax.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Not another seafood restaurant
ReplyDeletePetco will open on Metropolitan Av
In June.
Another Seafood Place! Nearest Seafood Place is London Lenny's and thats in Rego Park.

ReplyDeleteNo room for a Stop and Shop or the like on Queens Blvd.
ReplyDeleteIs Jack and Nellie's still considered "new"? I love that place.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I've only been there a couple of times, but it is truly great. Lots of fun.
