I noticed this cool passageway in what used to be the little mini-mall on 71st/Continental. It's looking quite spiffy in there. I wonder what businesses will be setting up shop? 

I assume I know what this one is going to be?

Massive Doing's on 71st Continental

Some photos of the massive spaces either under construction, or waiting to be, in the heart of Forest Hills on 71st Continental Ave. 

Just to bring you up to speed on what I had heard about these spaces:

- The former Duane Reade/Buffalo Wild Wings structure is going to become a Whole Foods. I heard this several months ago and those who said it sounded pretty sure of themselves. Since then.... nada but a For Rent sign on the windows. Sad, and still waiting for confirmation. 

If you take a look at the map of Whole Foods in the New York City area there is a gigantic white space between Long Island and Manhattan, with Forest Hills smack dab in the middle. We're an obvious choice. And this structure is even more so, smack dab as it sits in the middle of Forest Hills and just steps away from the subway station.

- Right across the street, where the Forest Hills mini-mall used to be housing Tasti D-Lite (remember those days?), a teeny tiny barbershop, etc., a massive construction project is underway. The only thing I've heard about this one is that it possibly may become a variety of small eateries.

Paris Baguette Opens on 71st/Continental

Thanks to readers Joe and Cher for the pics... And yes, Almighty God in Heaven, my discerning eye does indeed spot prepared sandwiches in that cold case. 

I must have been truly a good boy this year to deserve this. 

Paris Baguette Coming Into Radio Shack Space?

Friday Update: This information has been confirmed, they are moving into the Radio Shack space: Forest Hills' New Paris Baguette Won't Serve Espresso Thanks To Starbucks

The menu at the Forest Hills location will be almost the same as at other outposts and will include a variety of pastries, bread, soups and sandwiches.

I was told by a construction worker today that a Paris Baguette is going to open in the Radio Shack space. If you're not familiar with them, this is a global bakery chain. Here's the link for more information: http://parisbaguette.com/

There is already one of these nearby, in Rego Park. And if I recall, the chain was looking at the space where the new Dunkin' Donuts went into at Austin and Ascan.

Woman Injured by Hit and Run Driver

I received this email and disturbing photo from a reader today about a pedestrian hit at the intersection of 71st Continental Ave. and Austin Street on Friday evening:

Attention Edge Of the City: 

It may interest you to know that on Friday 4/22 around 6:30pm a woman was struck by a car on Austin St. (See attached photo Hit and run) As a routine commuter using the LIRR on weekdays this intersection is crazy. People running red lights all the time, road rage, K turns etc with people piling out of the E and F trains and LIRR, school kids and shoppers many of whom step off the side walk and into the road to cross or to pass slow moving people. The volume of pedestrians and motorists are clearly in the thousands. Queens is the most deadly borough leading the way with traffic related deaths and head injuries. Why there isn't a traffic cop at this intersection is beyond comprehension. My question to Melinda Katz is this...How many people have to get hit by a car in order to put a cop on duty at this intersection?

Snowy 71st/Continental Ave.

Forest Hills was—mostly—open for business the day after the blizzard. Many shops and restaurants were open. The challenge was mostly traversing the snowy and icy stretches in front of those business that hadn't yet shoveled out—and there were less and less of them as Sunday wore on...
