Massive Doing's on 71st Continental

Some photos of the massive spaces either under construction, or waiting to be, in the heart of Forest Hills on 71st Continental Ave.

Just to bring you up to speed on what I had heard about these spaces:

- The former Duane Reade/Buffalo Wild Wings structure is going to become a Whole Foods. I heard this several months ago and those who said it sounded pretty sure of themselves. Since then.... nada but a For Rent sign on the windows. Sad, and still waiting for confirmation.

If you take a look at the map of Whole Foods in the New York City area there is a gigantic white space between Long Island and Manhattan, with Forest Hills smack dab in the middle. We're an obvious choice. And this structure is even more so, smack dab as it sits in the middle of Forest Hills and just steps away from the subway station.

- Right across the street, where the Forest Hills mini-mall used to be housing Tasti D-Lite (remember those days?), a teeny tiny barbershop, etc., a massive construction project is underway. The only thing I've heard about this one is that it possibly may become a variety of small eateries.

Of course, if anyone has any information on either of these projects, please email us at edgeofthecity@gmail.com

Local Food Update

A couple of recent food experiences to share...

Agora Taverna

Is it just me, or has Agora Taverna on Austin St. gotten a lot better with time? The last couple of times I've been there (experiences stretched over several months) I've enjoyed what I've had both times. The latest: their grilled whole trout with lemon potatoes. I also had the hummus as an appetizer. Both were really good. And sitting outside the other evening for dinner in their extremely comfortable chairs made it that much more enjoyable. I have not been disappointed by this place recently, while my early experiences when it opened a couple of years ago were very hit or miss. I'm interested in hearing what other people think.

Munch

What to make of Munch, the little eatery in the Austin St. "mall" ? I stopped in there the other day for a late snack/meal and left with one of their tuna fish hero sandwiches. It wasn't bad. But also kind of reminded me of the tuna fish I'd make myself at home, which isn't saying too much, though I am not the worst cook in the universe. It's an interesting place and I can't speak for all the food there—yet, since I've only had this one sandwich. But it was fine and a nice option to have for simpler, fast-food fare that isn't Chinese or Mexican in the 'hood. They have a variety of salads, burgers and other sandwiches. I posted their entire menu a while back.

New Restaurant: Munch

Here's the menu for this new casual / takeout place that opened in the 'Austin Street Mall.' Has anyone tried it yet?

Jack & Nellie's

Here's some vittles from my visit to Jack & Nellie's, our new restaurant/night spot over on Ascan. These were taken quite a few weeks ago, and I was just about to post them then and then Hurricane Sandy struck.

Overall, I like Jack & Nellie's. My friends and I agreed it's not really a place for dinner, unless you have a fat wallet and are willing to fill up on a lot of small plates. The food we had, and the wine, was very good. But it's more of a place you go with friends for some light snacks/dinner, drinks and good conversation in a very nice, laid back atmosphere.
