I was just thinking—especially now that I've tried Gloria Pizza for myself a couple of hours ago and already want to go back for more—that I now can predict that the record-long streak of failing businesses that occupied that space next to the Midway Theater has now officially come to an end. I predict that as long as Gloria Pizza wants to remain in that spot, and can afford the rent, they will be there.
I will now try to recount all the different businesses that have been in that spot since I've lived in Forest Hills.
Let's see, first there was Krispy Kreme, followed by a pet store I think, then a pizza place, followed I think by new owners of another pizza place? And now Gloria Pizza.

Nope, that's what it was, Krispy Kreme, which closed a huge percentage of their stores nationwide (I think there are only a couple kiosks left in NYC), a pet store (which tend not to be very successful when they're actually selling puppy mill puppies), and one horrible pizza place after another. To think, I'd have to deal with A&J or Ariana when I wanted a slice, and now I finally have a viable option. I agree, this place will be a success, especially since they are the only nearby delivery option that takes credit cards.

ReplyDeleteYou've got to look at local competition. The only by the slice option is AJ. Is it better than AJ? Absolutely! Is it competing with all the pizza places in NYC? Nope. But it could put up a damn good fight if it did.

ReplyDeleteI went to the old Gloria’s since about 1970. This slice is the same or better than it ever was. They also have Grandma and other exotic slices. The regular is $2.50 in keeping with the tradition of approximating the subway fare. What is missing is Snaider’s Orange and Grape drinks. Maybe in time these too will appear like magic, the way the original Gloria’s slice has. This is the best thing to happen to Forest Hills in a long time.
ReplyDeleteQuick question: does Gloria provide grated cheese to sprinkle on the slices? I ask this only because I noticed on the menu that was posted a charge of $1 for grated cheese. I hope this is just a typo, and that they're not following in the nickel-and-dime game that Nicks pizza tries to play because that is a complete turn-off!

ReplyDeleteThey've been open for 2 days and I've been there twice. I am already so happy to have such a good pizza spot nearby. Yesterday, I had a plain slice and a Grandma slice. Both were awesome. Today, I went for a penne vodka slice (which was interesting, but not my fave), and another plain slice. Today's plain slice was even better than yesterday. It was saucy and sweet, just the way I like. I also grabbed some stuffed garlic knots on impulse, but am too stuffed to eat them just yet. Soon...

ReplyDeleteI had the chicken marsala (sp) on tuesday night and it was great. I loved it. I also had a regular slice and thought it was pretty good. My gf had the grandma and she like it. Definitely better than A&Js
