Now Delivering - Bareburger

Bareburger says it now delivers throughout the Forest Hills/Rego Park area.

I had lunch there yesterday, trying one of their salads for the first time instead of a burger. The Mexican salad (shown below) was just perfect. I also had a side of panko covered chicken strips, which were just awesome. It was all washed down by their terrific diet root beer (free refills included :) )

As you can tell, I really can't find anything lacking about the food at Bareburger. My only "complaint"— it would be great if they could eventually move to an even bigger space.

  1. I wish they moved into the old bridal shop a few feet down. That's a great space for BareBurger

  2. They made the same mistake that Boulangerie did-commit and build out a space that is too small. Hopefully future restaurants will learn from this.

  3. We had lunch there today and it was quite tasty. A few things - first, the price. Whoa! Two burgers (beef, nothing fancy) and fries came to more than $35. Second, at that price, the burgers should include fries. But no, they were an extra few bucks. Fine. But that doesn't even include any sauces. So you want me to buy a burger. And fries. And you can't even spot me a fancy mayo dip? The cost is just too much for this to become a regular eating spot for us. But if you want a treat, go for it. Avoid the maple lemonade. It just doesn't work.

    1. If you get the $5 side order of fries, it comes with fries large enough to feed 4 people and comes with 4 sauces, so cheaper option if you're not eating alone.

  4. Too expensive for what is basically a hamburger. After the broo-hah-ha tapers off, this place will close. I give it 3 years tops.

    1. What is your problem? I guess T-Bone diner is more up your alley since they're cheap enough for you. I also suppose the French Bakery wouldn't last either because they charge $2.50 for a croissant when you can get a stale one at the bagel place for a buck. No wonder queens has a rep for being geriatric, dirty and behind the times, when we've got so many people crowing about things they obviously haven't even tried.

  5. The comments above are laughable. 35 dollars for a sit down lunch for 2...expensive?? Do you even live in NY? Not to mention you can have it for dinner too - so 35 dollars for dinner for 2 is pretty much unheard of. If this place ever closes it's a poor reflection on the community of forest hills, not of bareburger. I guess people not liking bareburger is a explanation of why it's so hard to keep a decent restaurant in forest hills.

  6. You're paying for quality organic ingredients and this is reflected in the price. If you want a $6 burger, go to T Bone Diner or some other rat hole and eat pre-made patties that taste like a shoe. I agree with the poster above. Its tough keeping a decent restaurant in Forest Hills because people want quality but aren't willing to pay for it. This is another reason you will never see a Whole Foods in FOHI. The general population here isn't going to pay Whole Foods' prices for organic, quality foods. Heck, everyone complains about Natural's prices.

    Happy Easter everyone!

  7. It's not a problem, it's an opinion. Stop being so angry and defensive -- it's not helping your cause.

  8. I agree with the above 2 posters ..FH has nothing decent to eat because most residents are happy to eat mediocre and dont care they just want it to be cheap! Even when its not cheap the more mediocre the better as long as its one of their long time crappy restaurants that *used* to be good. They dont want anything new, hate to have options and are afraid of change. How do 2 people go out to eat for less then 35 bucks unless its fast food or the diner? are you serious???

Though I will disagree on one point.. all of Queens doesnt have a geriatric, dirty and behind the times culinary scene thats Forest Hills specific. Many other Queens hoods have a lot of good food

  9. The majority of those living in Forest Hills have jobs that pay well under 6 figures, hence the majority simply cannot afford high priced food. WHile a $35 meal may very well be affordable to those whose income is at least $100K, thats not the norm in this hood. Most people here in FH live in co-op's with very high maintenance which they struggle to pay, along with the rest of their bills. They don't have much, if any, disposable income to regularly go out to eat, especially in places that have higher than average prices. That is the reason why you see an abundance of pizza places and chinese take out, because they are very cheap!

    1. Got to disagree. FH incomes are higher than that of Astoria residents, and this is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in queens. Yet Astoria is teeming with great places to eat where two people dine for more than $35. Further, look at the housing prices. There is no house in this neighborhood worth less than a half million. With regard to coops, most buildings require 20% down with proof that mortgage plus maintanence does not make up more than 30% of your annual income, so buyers here are not struggling to pay high maintanence. Yes, it's high, but people moving here can't be struggling to pay it since boards safe guard against that. Also, you might want to take nitice of the amount of BMW, Lexus, Mercedes and Acura SUVs around the neighborhood, all of which cost about $50K not fully loaded. Even more superfluous, the high end strollers $600 and up, vastly outnumber the more common hundred dollar chicos in this neighborhood. Let's not even talk about the Windsor, where an apartment can sell for over a million. Some of the most popular restaurants here are not cheap. 5 Burros is cut ally quite pricey, so is Dirty Pierre's, but don't hear the same kind of "it's too expensive grumbling" that I do with the new places. Seeing as there seems to be a lot of disposable income in the neighborhood, I think it's really change people don't like. If Bareburger was a traditional Italian place charging $12 for spaghetti with meatballs, I'm betting people wouldn't bat an eye (even though that dish can be made for as little as $5).

  10. FOHI also attracts a lot of people who don't live here and who also are happy to spend their money at TGIF, Cabana or Pizzeria Uno. That crowd won't spend on a high end restaurant. Astoria attracts a lot of outsiders who spend $$ because they have $$. FOHI doesn't attract that outside crowd. Bareburger will do well because its not that big and will always be packed. T Bone will continue to do well because FOHI will always have the mediocre crowd too.

    1. I wouldn't lump Cabana in with TGIF and Uno's. I've never left Cabana without spending at least $70 for a dinner for two. Bareburger is a steal compared to that. And Cabana is always packed, so someone is spending cash. Perhaps if Forest Hills had more restaurants that attract people willing to spend $$$ (such as Danny Brown which has a Michelin star) then more
people would come here to spend. Imagine the crowds that would come if we ha a Whole Foods!

  11. Astoria attracts people who dont live there because it has options and not all of those options are high end..most of them are not.

  12. You say Tomato I say Tahmatoe. Either way this thread proves that there is an argument for both high and low end options. And it is not like there is a lack of real-estate for either. Take it easy and enjoy the changes. If you are not into it-visit the venues you want to support. No biggie-sheesh!!!

  13. Forest Hills = elderly people, fixed incomes, tastebuds on decline; Russian expatriates used to Communist food; Kosher households used to bland-tasting meals (trust me, I used to live in Riverdale); Asians who live here but flock to nearby Flushing for meals. Result: TGIF, mediocre FH diners, Johnny Rocket-like chains, etc.

Astoria = 20 and 30 somethings. Free-spending Hipsters. Old-time Greek bon vivants. Manhattan transplants. Eurotrash. Working class Mexicans, Columbians, Egyptians, etc. Result: variety, noise, dirt, great food choices. Real estate prices much higher(outpricing everything in FH except for Gardens area).

I welcome Bareburger! More young people need to move to the Hills and shake things up.

    1. You have an extremely simplistic way of looking at people. Kinda feel sorry for you, it must make life very boring, but , hey, it's your life! Although I have to say if I had a Racist Commenter Award, you'd win it. Congrats, I guess!

I think the problem with the restaurants in Forest Hills has been the location. FoHi has been near the border of Long Island and New York City, a part of the city that declined in the 60's, 70's and 80's as many people with a lot of money fled the city to the suburbs.

Now, that trend is reversing. NYC overall is a much more desirable place to live today than the suburbs. (Look at the crime rate, for example. It is lower in NYC than in the rest of New York State now.)

With this trend reversal, as you would expect, are coming better, more upscale, better quality, places to eat.

  14. Not a racist comment; just generalizations which have elements of truth. Elderly who have lost their taste buds is not a racist comment. Nor are the others. A tad too PC are you?

Sophisticated older people are the ones who keep the finer restaurants in Manhattan in business. Hipsters show no loyalty; there are more interested in scene vs. food.
