Please welcome Forest Hills' latest food truck, Coolhaus, parked over on 71st/Continental Ave. today, and offering up some quite delicious treats.

  1. Coolhaus is killing me - they were across from my office yesterday and now near my home...COOLHAUS!!!

  2. The "cool" food trucks are always staffed by people you generally would not expect to be working in a food truck. The "not so cool" food trucks are always staffed by people you generally would expect to be working in a food truck.

  3. Food trucks are lame. We need less people here, not more. And better merchants in their existing shops.

Not more businesses from food trucks.

  4. No, food trucks are awesome! They give up and coming chefs a chance to make innovative cuisine. Get with the times!

  5. Coolhaus parked here in the fall, too.

  6. Up and coming chefs can get access to plenty of locations, in fact lots of them are vacant even today.

More retail locations should be built out if people want food. Not mobile food trucks.

  7. I think there's room enough here for everybody. If the landlords weren't so greedy we wouldn't have so many empty stores.

  8. Food trucks pollute the environment, take up precious parking spaces and are defacto filthy. The Wafle truck is gross. If you visit it in the evening, it looks like an airplane lavatory upon arrival.

    1. I love this comment! So the pollution from your own car is fine and dandy but God forbid it comes from a food truck that takes up your parking space? What hypocrisy!

    2. Only fools would pay those outrageous prices for ice cream!!
The guy is charging Manhattan prices in Queens. Who does he think he is?

    3. Get used to it. It's increasingly one big city. Borough differentiations are quickly becoming a thing of the past in this day and age. The future is more about whether you live in the city or the burbs.

    4. Definitely agree here with Drake. Queens and Brooklyn are just as expensive as manhattan these days, except for rent. Our supermarkets, price for a beer all match up with manhattan prices.

    5. I drive a hybrid Drake so I'm not polluting, thank you. Street curbs are there for parking, not for a truck to take up space and sell ice cream.

    6. What universe do you live in? Food trucks are all over the city, have been so for years. They're not going away and some of them have excellent food.

    7. "Excellent food"!? Boy, you have some pretty low standards.

Btw, crack is all over the city but it doesn't make it right.

      Delete
    8. Extremely high standards. You must be a newbie to this blog.

    9. Ba-ha-ha, I don't think so. No, I've been around and have read many of your low brow wussy postings. In fact, I know this blog so well I know you will delete this posting and not leave it online.

    10. If you hate it so much here, why are you here?

      Delete
    11. I don't hate it and you are of course providing a great blog for Forest Hills. You just have to be more receptive to other people's comments and criticisms. Scroll up and see your initial response to my comment. It was very wussy.

      Delete
    12. Oh, quite receptive to people who leave intelligent comments and are not obnoxious.

    13. Be careful Anon, the last time I tried to provide insight on the blog, I somehow got blamed for being a Republican, lol.

Its all in good fun. This blog reaches a wide audience and the momentum is what keeps it going. As more people move to the neighborhood, I'm sure it'll grow even more. Looking forward to continued success.

  9. There are probably only 5 or so empty storefronts along all of Austin Street. It's not what it was like 6 years when the economy started to tank

  10. Lets keep a close eye on the flying pig. We were in the Greek place and a wrangler invited us for a drink at the FP. We go over, hostess welcomes us, we go in. Next thing you know, we are told its private and we have to leave. U guess they don't want gay people coming in. We don't need this business in Forest hills;

    1. Seems more likely you experienced some kind of misunderstanding with the hostess.

    2. If we were in Waco, TX I would agree with you, but not in Forest Hills

  11. And Drake would pay $6- $10 for a frozen dairy concoction from someone obviously gouging the public?
I can't afford that for my kids. $1 cones at McDs is our bag. FH is no UWS or Battery Park City get used to it.

    1. Have you considered that it is changing and people are now willing to spend that kind of money? And please do not call whatever McDonald's serves as real anything. God knows what is in that "ice cream".

  13. I was unfamiliar with Coolhaus until reading this post. Decided to do a little digging before commenting on their pricing (which does look on the high end, reading the menu posted).

Here's a little snippet I found on the Coohaus website:

But first and foremost is our dedication to quality and sustainability. Every Coolhaus Ice Cream Sandwich is all-natural, handmade and organic whenever possible. Our dairy is sustainably produced and artificial growth hormone free. We use local and seasonal farmer's market fresh ingredients. Plus, every ice cream sandwich is wrapped in a customizable, edible wrapper that is all-natural and calorie-free. Talk about being Green! Instead of throwing away your wrapper, you get to eat it!

Next stop was checking out their FB page and based on the photos posted, it looks like the serving size if pretty substantial.

I believe 1 scoop of ice cream with syrup at Eddie's Sweet Shop is $4.95 and a single scoop (no topping) at Haagen Dazs is ~ $3.50.

At Coolhaus you're getting an ORGANIC product that includes what looks to be a pretty decent scoop of ice cream plus two cookies for $6.00. I'm a pretty big stickler in regards to organic dairy products, so I don't really have an issue with their pricing. When you break it down and compare it to what else is available, it's really not as outrageous as it may seem.

If organic isn't of importance to you, plenty of other ice cream options in the neighborhood.

  14. To the poster about McD's cones ... you can't compare McD's products to these places. McD's is ... I hate to say it, but "garbage" food. It's full of chemicals and stuff to make the product last longer or taste better. There's no way you can make a quality product on that price.

  15. Just noticed they serve Blue Bottle coffee! Amazing!

    2. I know you retired your services a long time ago, but you seem to have a lot of insight on FoHi and health, two MAJOR issues my wife and I enjoy. Keep up the good work.

      - Btw, I tried Dirty Pierre's per your recommendation of lower sodium goodies (laying off the English muffin and ordering non salted fries and I have to say....yum!

      Regards,

  18. Thanks, and I'm happy to answer any health/nutrition questions you have.

Glad you enjoy Dirty Pierre's. I'm a burger 'gal, and I definitely treat myself to a DP burger and fries every now and then during the summer months (love sitting outside, although it would be nice if the scaffolding would finally go away!)

Tomorrow night it's Tuscan Hills for me. I can always count on Roberto to make me something yummy, sans the salt :)

  20. I'm not sure I understand the criticism of this place. This is a mobile food truck. Unlike other types of businesses, if you don't like what they do, you could just ignore it, and they'll find another community to park in.

That being said, I've never tried this food truck, but I'm excited to. Food is culture, and I'm glad to see all this new, local culture popping up in Forest Hills. Wouldn't you want your community to be comprised of small, independently owned eateries run by locals, rather than cheapo big business chains? I certainly do, and I'm content to see the neighborhood change.

  21. Ice cream truck = Culture??????????

  22. I agree James that our street food culture is growing thanks to the proliferation of food trucks.

James, as a home brewer I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on Station House, The Flying Pig, and the beer selection at Mr Vinos Cucina. I'm far from being a beef aficionado so I'd love to hear the opinion of someone well versed on the topic of beer!

  23. I'm glad I'm not the only to notice than Queens is expensive in almost every single way as Manhattan except for residential real estate. Apparently even commercial real estate is just as expensive, at least in places like Austin Street, if store owners have to charge the same prices as their Manhattan counterparts.
