It's been a rumor for the past couple of weeks that H&M was opening on Austin St., in the space being renovated near Bareburger. Then, this morning @DavidSchantz tweeted that it was in fact going to happen and he tells me it is confirmed.
There is also one at Queens Mall. The new construction design is that of an H+M facility.
While I don't shop, this is a very nice addition to the neighborhood and much better than the smaller shops.
I believe my cousin shops at H+M in the Queens Center Mall even though she lives in Manhattan. So I wonder how this will affect business at the Queens Center Mall location.
It provides a useful shop that people seem to like which has decent clothing for reasonable pricing, and replaces the smaller boutiques and makes next to bareburger that much nicer.
If it is H&M; it might very well be an experimental concept store. I thought I saw something in Crain's about H&M rolling out "home & housewares" line in the U.S. this would explain the imminent departure of Laytner's. Which of course would help satisfy those uncontrollable urges to drive to Red Hook to buy cheap Swedish housewares!
That would make sense. The location is much larger than Laytners and will be a brand new facility.
The older building looked horrible like an old Queens housing structure. The new facility from the photos will be bright, airy and modern and make a nice shopping facility.
Eh, another chain, this time the cheap clothing variety that H&M is known for. How I wish it was Armani Exchange or a higher end clothing store instead!
Ooohhh, I vote for a J.Crew! I am actually a little disappointed that the space is being used for BareBurger. While I like BareBurger just fine, I think the space they currently have suits them. It's hardly ever completely full, and the only time I've ever had to wait for a table is when I stopped by on a Sunday during brunch hours. I'd much rather see that space be used for a completely new business venture.
The look of the neighborhood with a Jcrew would be great. It's what I'm sure Banana Republic once did for Austin Street before they decided to downgrade to their Old Navy counterpart. Now I walk by BR and sigh :0(
I know, they have been such a disappointment for several seasons. I don't bother to go in anymore. Everything fits so poorly and the designs are awful.
Virtually every single large building I have ever seen being constructed in this area over the past few years has received a stop work order at one time or another.
Not surprised..I peeped in the other day and they razed everything. If previous accounts of the permits were correct they were not allowed to tear everything down.
If some random guy Tweeted it, it must be true!
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be an Urgent Medical Care (walk-in) center. No H&M, Apple Store or CVS on Austin unfortunately.

ReplyDeleteArmani Exchange...seriously?
ReplyDeleteHAHA "high end" Armani Exchange. We're better off expanding the crappy Aldo down the street than bringing in the douche-fest that is AX. I vo

J.Crew or Anthropologie would have been amazing!

DeleteOr Piperlime, they recently expanded to stores and are not online only anymore.
ReplyDeleteA Piperlime would be awesome! I also agree with the Anthropologie and J.Crew idea. Or even Madewell.
DeleteA stop work order was issued on August 22.

DeleteOh, and I should add, they always eventually get the green light to continue.
