That corner will be really horrendous with the amount of garbage from a) taxi cab passengers b) 711 patrons and c) 711 themselves. You win some you lose some. At least we're getting back that subway exit. But when???
Why all the animosity towards 7-11? Yes, their storefront it ugly as all hell but it's Queens Boulevard! Let's not act so elitist, we're better than that.
I think the haters have a legitimate point. What added value does 7-11 provide that doesn't already exist in the neighborhood? I think we can do without the hot dogs and slurpees.
I heard that two taxi drivers are the co-owners. They should get alot of their fellow taxi drivers coming in for coffee ... They better not throw their empty cups and all into the street or onto the sidewalk!!!
I've never seen the vagrants and troublemakers you describe around the 7-11 on Metro Ave., and I frequent it about 3-4 days a week. I see a number of young men on Austin St. often in the evening after many of the mobile phone shops have closed with signs asking for money though. I don't know if they're homeless or not, but there is one older, senior citizen aged man who claims to be, and he has a little white dog with him. Anyone know who I mean? The sight of the two of them is heartbreaking, and I sincerely hope they get the help they need.
I know him. He is a very kind man, his name is Sam. He suffers from mental illness and has had some hardships. I've talked to him from time to time for a few years. I give him some cash when I see him, wish there was more that I could do. He has been on hard times for a while. I don't think he has much support via family/friends. He is a sweetheart.
That's very nice of you to help him. I have on occasion given him some packages of Caesar for his dog, but I know that's not much. Is he actually homeless or does he have an apartment? I'm really hoping there must be some social services and assistance that can be provided to him. It's painful to see a kind, elderly man suffer.
Last time I saw him was about a year ago and someone was letting him live in a Long Island City studio apt. rent free but I remember him saying that this was coming to an end and that he did not know where to go after that. I was actually happy to hear on this blog that he is still around, have not seen him in so long so I started to worry. He loves his dog so much and the dog's health is not good, I believe she is blind. : (
Is this the same guy at the subway exit with the dog at his side and a sign saying he lost his co-op through a foreclosure? It's a terrible situation. But even with a co-op, maintenance increases have been getting out oh hand. My building just increased 10 percent. No joke.
Hey, this is MUCH better than the OTB that used to occupy the space. Even though you'd find some older men loitering outside smoking cigarettes , I didn't see many "vagrants, weirdos and trouble makers" so I'm expecting this can only be for the better.....I hope.
They closed their other location, at Queens Blvd across from Kennedy House if I recall correctly, due to low volume. Sorry, but there's an insufficient biking population to justify two bike shops within one subways stop of each other. You're SOL.
They actually moved from their old location because the rent increase was too high. Lots of other businesses on that block are gone because of the raised rent including Just Like Mothers
So excited about the new 7-eleven. Best Coffee in town. As for the litter...how can you blame any merchant for the behavior of its customers? Don't be a bunch of cranky old ladies...
The city is dirty because there are too many careless and disrepectful people living here. Fast food restaurants, coffee/donut shops, newsstands, 7-11s, all sell disposable packaging, that far too often ends up on the sidewalks and streets of our neighborhood. If it weren't for the Doe Fund workers on Austin Street, could you imagine how things would look? The sanitation dept needs to hand out fines to litters and stores that don't clean up the front of their property.
More litter for our neighborhood.

ReplyDeleteBelieve me, I will make sure 7-11 keeps their area clean!
ReplyDeleteUgh. WHY?????

ReplyDelete7-11 brings the hood down. The one on Metropolitan Avenue attracts vagrants, weirdos and trouble makers.
ReplyDeleteI heard that two taxi drivers are the co-owners. They should get alot of their fellow taxi drivers coming in for coffee ... They better not throw their empty cups and all into the street or onto the sidewalk!!!

ReplyDeleteI don't mind 7-11, but this area really needs a bike shop! To get to the closest one, you need to take the subway.
ReplyDeleteSpin City Cycle is on 66th & Queens Blvd. You could bike there from anywhere in Forest Hills.
DeleteYes, but if I need a bike fixed before going on a ride and I have to ride to the shop, then it's already too far.

DeleteRent increases happen. It wasn't their only reason.
