Seeing Green

  1. Expensive non metered gypsy cabs. What happened to the Real NYC Taxis? Hopefully after they finish construction, the real taxis will be back.

    1. Those are metered taxis, the only difference is that they can't pick up in most of Manhattan. Otherwise they are just like the yellow cabs, just green.

    2. Umm...the green cabs have nothing to do with the construction. They are a product of a new law passed by the State and the TLC a few years ago. They are also not gypsy cabs. They are licensed livery cabs with the legal right to pick up street hails. Nor are they non-metered or expensive. It cost me $5 for a quick trip from Queens Center to Forest Hills in bad weather on a weekend. Try getting that price with a yellow cab. As a matter of fact, try finding a yellow cab in Queens first!

    3. $5 for a quick trip from the mall to FH? When? 1997? Theres no way you've gotten that in the past 15 yrs.

    4. I agree-no way that quick trip could cost less than $10.

  2. The green apple colored cabs with the lights and number on top are metered -- just like the yellow cabs and take credit cards. There are some green colored ones without the number on top that are unmetered and try to rip you off but if you avoid them then these new green cabs are a great service to the borough.

  3. I don't hear anyone saying thank you Mayor Bloomberg for the green cabs? We need to recognize how good we've had it in New York these past 20 years. Get set, because DeBlasio is taking us back in time, way back!

  4. Those green cabs are just like the yellow cabs, the only difference is that they are meant to be for the outer boroughs. If you hail one of them while in Manhattan they can't refuse you if you ask them to take you to one of other boroughs.

    1. No cab can refuse to take you to the outer boroughs and any yellow cabs that do should be reported to the TLC. The green cabs cannot pick up in Manhattan below 125th Street, whether or not you are going to the boroughs. They can only street hail in the outer boroughs or way Uptown.
