Some Reader Pics

Steve spotted one of them fancy new "outer borough" green cabs roaring down Queens Blvd... By the way, don't get me started on this one. Personally, I don't quite get it. I think the boundaries between Manhattan and the "outer boroughs" are quickly blurring and I predict they will eventually be completely erased (maybe not in my lifetime, but eventually ;) ...  So, do we really need our own special cabs? I guess, probably? For now anyway? Discuss, or not...

And Linda snapped this pic of what she said was a "beautiful night for some Jazz" last Thursday eve, on our Restaurant Row during our summer jazz nights...

As always, thanks guys for sending in your pics and keep 'em coming!

City Room: Taxi Fares in New York to Rise by 17%

The Taxi and Limousine Commission voted to raise fares by an average of 17 percent, the first major increase in eight years. The fares could go into effect as soon as September.

iPads Coming to NYC Cabs?

Will iPads Replace TV Screens in NYC Taxis?

The first thing I thought was they would end up losing a lot of iPads!  :) But then I read that they are going to be embedded in the cars....

In any case, this would be neat for those, oh, like five times each year I actually take a cab. In fact, that's a whole other thing. Don't you love it how in TV shows and films set in New York City they always show everyone taking cabs? Puhlease! How often do real New Yorkers take cabs?

Oh, and one other thing. Now that they've actually gone and installed WIFI in some of the Manhattan subway stations, I miss it even MORE in those stations that don't have it. Mayor Bloomberg, you pride yourself on being so hip and trendy when it comes to things like green initiatives and what-not. I know you don't have much control of the MTA, but isn't there something you can do to get this done already? I mean, in this day and age, not to have phone service on the subways, or at least the platforms, really makes us look third world.

Our New Taxis

Say hello to our next generation of NYC taxi cabs, coming soon to a street near you:

New York City taxis to get suburban look, Japanese nameplate

This last pic is just one I took a couple of months ago when I was in Times Square. Three different versions of NYC cabs just happened to be stopped at a red light and made for a cool shot:

It's Not Your Imagination!

N.Y. / Region
Where Do All the Cabs Go in the Late Afternoon?
By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM
Published: January 11, 2011
Just when homebound workers need them, cabs on duty decline by nearly 20 percent. City officials have been unable to prevent it.

Of course, if they did something about this incredibly annoying and seriously stupid fact of life here in NYC, that would take away the small - admittedly evil - ego boost I get each time I see a newcomer to the city or tourist trying to hail a cab at 5 p.m., and walk by them muttering under my breath, "Good luck with that."
