Ice Skating, Holiday Vendors Planned for Forest Hills Stadium Winter Season

According to Newsday:
With the once-crumbling infrastructure of the venue now replaced and reinforced, Luba said it was time to move to the next step. After Forest Hills Stadium wraps up its concert season this year, promoters plan to transform it into “Winter Wonderland,” which will include a skating rink inside the stadium surrounded by Christmas-tree and other holiday vendors. “We want to keep the place up and running year-round,” Luba said. “The ice skating rink will be for the community.”

ROGER DALTREY of THE WHO Joins The New York Pops at Forest Hills Stadium on June 17

The New York Pops and Music Director Steven Reineke unite with Roger Daltrey on Sunday, June 17 at 8:00 p.m. (doors at 6:30 p.m.) at Forest Hills Stadium for a special, one-night-only performance of The Who’s ‘TOMMY’. The orchestra and Daltrey are joined by a band of seasoned Who players, including guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, guitarist Frank Simes, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button, and drummer Scott Devours.

The concert marks The New York Pops’ return for its fourth season at Forest Hills Stadium, presented by Q104.3 and Madison House Presents.

Considered one of the seminal albums of the rock canon, The Who’s ‘TOMMY’ includes classics such as "Pinball Wizard,” “See Me, Feel Me,” and more, and was last played by The Who for the first time in 28 years at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of a benefit concert for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The performance also marks Roger Daltrey’s return to the Forest Hills stage, after his summer 1971 appearance when The Who performed as part of a sold-out, two-night stand.
The New York Pops’ appearance is generously supported by Morgan Stanley, Blue Marble Cocktails, American Airlines, and Wigdor LLP, with additional support from the City of New York and the New York City Council.
A SPECIAL NEW YORK POPS PRE-SALE WILL TAKE PLACE on FEBRUARY 8 from 10 AM to 10 PM.

The New York Pops Returns to Forest Hills

As much fun as the previous Pops concerts have been at Forest Hills Stadium, I have to say my personal favorite was last night's sci-fi themed extravaganza as The Pops played a tribute to film score composer John Williams and his collaboration over the years with directors George Lucas (Star Wars) and Steven Spielberg (E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.)

Here are some pics I took from the concert, and a couple of clips from my favorite moments!

Ice Skating, Haunted House Coming to Forest Hills?

Tucked into yesterday's amazing news about AEG's deal with Forest Hills Stadium, was this exciting news about the hopes to bring off-season uses to the Stadium as well...

"AEG will also consider plans to operate the venue in the off-season, potentially as a haunted house during Halloween and an ice-rink during winter months."

The New York Pops Returning to Forest Hills Stadium in June - Tickets on Sale Starting Today!

MUSIC DIRECTOR STEVEN REINEKE LEADS THE ORCHESTRA
IN ICONIC FILM MUSIC

On June 8, 2017, The New York Pops will return to its summer home, Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY, for a program of music by legendary film composer John Williams. After two successful seasons at the open-air venue, The New York Pops is proud to return to the stadium for an evening featuring the musicians of the orchestra in some of the most popular music ever written for the silver screen. The orchestra’s Kids in the Balcony program, which has expanded greatly since its offshootKids in the Stadium was introduced in 2015 thanks in part to the generosity of concert presenters Madison House Presents, will offer more than 1,500 Queens children and their families an opportunity to attend and learn about live music for free.

This concert is generously supported by Morgan Stanley, AT&T, and Wigdor LLP, with additional support from the City of New York and the New York City Council.

Steven Reineke
“Playing at Forest Hills Stadium has really been a dream come true” said Music Director Steven Reineke. “With our third season at the stadium this summer, we are really cementing our status as a ‘must do’ summer event in NYC – and I can’t tell you how much we love being there! The orchestra sounds great in this beautiful venue, and watching the sun set over the top of the stadium while we’re looking out at a crowd of fans is one of our favorite summer traditions. Get ready for an evening of music that will transport you from a galaxy far, far away to a park full of dinosaurs, from Civil War-era Washington to shark-infested waters off the coast of New England. It’s going to be a blast!”

“There are few things more iconic and awe-inspiring than the New York Pops and the music of John Williams. AT&T is proud to support another exciting season at Forest Hills Stadium, and to help bring Williams’ incredible scores to life,” said Marissa Shorenstein, AT&T SVP for the East Region. “We are also thrilled to give back to the Queens community by once again offering free access to this one-of-a-kind experience right in their own borough.”

"As a fifteen year-resident of Forest Hills and dedicated member of the West Side Tennis Club, I know The New York Pops are both great performers and good citizens, supporting talented local musicians and giving 1,500 Queens children the opportunity to attend the series for free,” said Douglas H. Wigdor, Founding Partner Wigdor LLP. “It is a true honor and pleasure for Wigdor LLP to support the return of the New York Pops for a proud third season at Forest Hills Stadium."

The New York Pops concerts at Forest Hills Stadium are family-friendly events. Food and beverage is available for purchase on the stadium grounds. Family ticket packages available.
Forest Hills Stadium events have been made possible through a partnership with the local community, with a focus on making concerts a rewarding experience for all involved. Dedicated entrances and exits have been constructed to manage audience flow. The stadium is conveniently located feet from the E, M, F, and R subway trains as well as the LIRR, and concert-goers are strongly encouraged to utilize public transportation as there is no parking available at the stadium or in the surrounding community.

TICKETS
Tickets go on sale Friday, April 21, at 10 AM at www.foresthillsstadium.com and range from $22.50 to $102.50.

ABOUT FOREST HILLS STADIUM

From Billie Jean King to The Beatles, Jimmy Connors to Jimi Hendrix, Chris Evert to The Rolling Stones, for decades the stadium at the West Side Tennis Club was not only host of the U.S. Open, it was also a renowned music venue, tucked into a leafy neighborhood of stately homes in Queens' Forest Hills neighborhood. However, when the U.S. Open moved to larger space in Flushing, Queens in 1977, the architecturally stunning, horseshoe-shaped Forest Hills Stadium fell into disrepair and its days as a music venue faded. In 2013, concert promoters partnered with the West Side Tennis Club to rehabilitate the stadium and bring events back to this storied venue.
Forest Hills Stadium reopened in August 2013 with an inaugural performance by Mumford & Sons on their “Full English” tour. The concert, the first in the stadium in over 15 years, brought music fans from all over the world to Forest Hills, Queens to experience live music in a truly unique environment. The 2014 concert season featured performances by Zac Brown Band, Drake, Lil Wayne, Brand New, Modest Mouse, The Replacements and Phil Lesh. Following its reopening, the stadium underwent a restoration, including a number of renovations and improvements. These included ticketed seating in the upper bowl, improved ADA seating options, widened aisles and handrail installation as well as a new concourse plan featuring easier access to food, beverage and other facilities. Ticketing was improved through a new, fan-friendly reserved ticketing system provided by Ticketfly.

New York Pops at Forest Hills Stadium with Matthew Morrison and Megan Hilty

Here are some photos from last night's show. Like last year, it was fantastic, mixing some classical American songs like "Take the A Train," and "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," with some more modern Broadway hits from shows like "Finding Neverland" and "Hairspray." Matthew Morrison and Megan Hilty lended their star power to the incredible talent of the Pops orchestra. As Pops Conductor Steve Reineke remarked, there were more people at the concert this year than last, so it seems word of their new summer home here in Forest Hills is growing and they are becoming a local favorite!

Forest Hills Stadium's Secret VIP Rooms

This is really cool: The best concert seat in NYC is inside this porta-potty

There is no amount of names you can drop, palms you can grease or cleavage you can show that will get you into the strangest VIP room in New York City. The only key you need for this secret spot in Forest Hills Stadium is a 9-volt battery — and the ability to act like you need to go … to the bathroom.

Needless to say, "I want in!"

Happy Pride Day!

We had a great time at the Dolly Parton concert last night at the Stadium. I realized it was my 6th concert at the Stadium since music returned there on August 28, 2013: Mumford (2013); James Taylor (2015); New York Pops (twice) (2015); Disclosure (2016) and now Dolly (2016).

Anyway, Dolly put on a great show, I'm sure anyone who attended would agree. She's really amazing.

And, this pic of a couple of rather enthusiastic Dolly fans at the concert last night also gave me a fresh new Gay Pride Day photo to use on the blog! It will battle the Gay Imperial Storm Trooper on this website each year going forward! (I also included that one below for good measure.)

Happy Pride Day everyone!

An Inside Look at Forest Hills Stadium

Forest Hills Stadium closes out its 2015 Summer Season tonight with a concert by Alabama Shakes (by the way. as usual, if you're going to the concert and happen to take some photos, please send them in to the Blog at edgeofthecity@gmail.com and I'll post the best ones).

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting for those who didn't attend any concerts this summer and who might be curious, to share some photos of how the Stadium's grounds have evolved as the concerts have really begun to take off since the opening season in 2013. Here's some photos of the food and drink areas. I thought it was cool that Heineken has set up a pop-up location on the grounds, kind of like a mini-version of what they do each year at the U.S. Open.

The food offerings are off to a good start. It's nice to see local Danny Brown's represented, along with Bulldog Burgery, and the Manhattan-based Mayhem & Stout. It would be cool to see the food offerings expand further next season...
