The New York Pops Returns to Forest Hills
As much fun as the previous Pops concerts have been at Forest Hills Stadium, I have to say my personal favorite was last night's sci-fi themed extravaganza as The Pops played a tribute to film score composer John Williams and his collaboration over the years with directors George Lucas (Star Wars) and Steven Spielberg (E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.)

The New York Pops Returning to Forest Hills Stadium in June - Tickets on Sale Starting Today!

On June 8, 2017, The New York Pops will return to its summer home, Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY, for a program of music by legendary film composer John Williams. After two successful seasons at the open-air venue, The New York Pops is proud to return to the stadium for an evening featuring the musicians of the orchestra in some of the most popular music ever written for the silver screen. The orchestra’s Kids in the Balcony program, which has expanded greatly since its offshootKids in the Stadium was introduced in 2015 thanks in part to the generosity of concert presenters Madison House Presents, will offer more than 1,500 Queens children and their families an opportunity to attend and learn about live music for free.
This concert is generously supported by Morgan Stanley, AT&T, and Wigdor LLP, with additional support from the City of New York and the New York City Council.

From Billie Jean King to The Beatles, Jimmy Connors to Jimi Hendrix, Chris Evert to The Rolling Stones, for decades the stadium at the West Side Tennis Club was not only host of the U.S. Open, it was also a renowned music venue, tucked into a leafy neighborhood of stately homes in Queens' Forest Hills neighborhood. However, when the U.S. Open moved to larger space in Flushing, Queens in 1977, the architecturally stunning, horseshoe-shaped Forest Hills Stadium fell into disrepair and its days as a music venue faded. In 2013, concert promoters partnered with the West Side Tennis Club to rehabilitate the stadium and bring events back to this storied venue.
Forest Hills Stadium reopened in August 2013 with an inaugural performance by Mumford & Sons on their “Full English” tour. New York Pops at Forest Hills Stadium with Matthew Morrison and Megan Hilty
Here are some photos from last night's show. Like last year, it was fantastic, mixing some classical American songs like "Take the A Train," and "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," with some more modern Broadway hits from shows like "Finding Neverland" and "Hairspray." Matthew Morrison and Megan Hilty lended their star power to the incredible talent of the Pops orchestra. As Pops Conductor Steve Reineke remarked, there were more people at the concert this year than last, so it seems word of their new summer home here in Forest Hills is growing and they are becoming a local favorite!

MEGAN HILTY Megan Hilty is most recognizable for her portrayal of seasoned triple-threat Ivy Lynn in NBC’s musical drama Smash. She followed up the series with a starring role on the comedy Sean Saves the World. This spring, Hilty received critical acclaim for her role of Brooke Ashton in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of Noises Off. She has earned nominations for a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award for her performance. Earlier this year, she recurred on Bravo’s dramedy Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce and she is currently appearing in the final season of CBS’ The Good Wife. This May, Hilty released a live album comprising of songs from her recent concert tour, entitled Megan Hilty Live at the Café Carlyle. She just recently completed a residency at New York’s Café Carlyle, where she previously performed the last two years. This summer, she will appear in Hulu’s Difficult People and CBS’ BrainDead and continue to tour abroad, making her Australian debut as part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
In March 2013, Hilty released her debut solo album, It Happens All The Time, which included fresh interpretations of compositions by contemporary songwriters and producers. Earlier, Hilty starred as Lorelei Lee, the diamond-loving blonde made famous by Carol Channing, in the Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, for which she earned rave reviews. A native of Seattle, Hilty moved to New York City after graduating from the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, and quickly made her Broadway debut as Glinda in Wicked. She went on to perform the role in both the national tour and in Los Angeles.
After receiving high praise for her portrayal of Doralee Rhodes in Broadway’s 9 to 5: The Musical, Hilty was honored with nominations for Lead Actress in a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards, the Drama League Awards and L.A. MATTHEW MORRISON Matthew Morrison is a versatile actor who is recognized for his work on-stage and on-screen. He has been nominated for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Morrison most recently starred as J.M Barrie in the Harvey Weinstein musical Finding Neverland through January 2016. The Broadway production is an adaptation of the 2004 film written by David Magee. The story follows the relationship between Barrie and the Davies family, who became the author’s inspiration for the creation of Peter Pan. Morrison received two Drama Desk nominations for his role, and won the category of Favorite Actor in a Musical in the Broadway.com Audience Awards.
In 2015, Morrison wrapped the final season of Fox’s musical comedy series Glee, where he starred as the director of the glee club, Mr. Schuester. The show was created by Ryan Murphy and received the Golden Globe award “Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical” in 2010 and 2011. Morrison was the first artist signed to Adam Levine’s record label, 222 Records, where he released his Broadway standards album, “Where it All Began,” in June 2013. In 2012, Morrison starred in the Lionsgate film, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, which was based on the book of the same name, directed by Kirk Jones. The film also starred Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez and Dennis Quaid among others. Morrison played a famous dance show star who is faced with the unexpected demands of fatherhood. The film was released on May 18, 2012.
In March 2012, Morrison hosted and narrated the PBS special entitled Oscar Hammerstein II - Out of My Dreams, which focused on the Broadway producer’s life and career. Also in March 2012, Morrison was featured in a performance of Dustin Lance Black’s play, 8, a staged reenactment of the federal trial that overturned California’s Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage. The performance raised money for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Morrison studied musical theater, vocal performance and dance at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He made his debut on Broadway in Footloose but his big break came when he was cast as heartthrob Link Larkin in the hit Hairspray. Morrison was later nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Light in the Piazza, and received a Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for 10 Million Miles. He also starred in the Tony-winning revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center Theater in New York. Morrison currently resides in New York.

The New York Pops Returns to Forest Hills Stadium with Broadway and Television Star Matthew Morrison
On July 7, 2016, The New York Pops will return to its summer home, Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY, for a program starring Tony and Emmy nominee Matthew Morrison and a special guest to be announced.
After a wildly successful outing at the open-air venue in summer 2015, The New York Pops is proud to return to Queens with a full, 78-piece orchestra. The concert will also continue the expanded version of the orchestra’s Kids in the Balcony program, offering 1,000 children an opportunity to attend and learn about live music for free.

Here are some photos from last night's wonderful concert at The
Stadium, with special guest star Sutton Foster. The weather really
cooperated for the Pops' first concert here at their new summer home.
The show was just terrific, a blend of classic Broadway music with pop
entertainment (everyone really got into the TV theme montage!), and even
a good dose of tap dancing!
After seeing the concert last night, I feel like we are so very lucky to have had this modern cultural treasure choose our neighborhood for its new summer home, to bring this kind of wonderful entertainment to within walking distance of where we live.
If you weren't able to make last night's show, well, the Pops are back for an encore performance tonight. I think there are some tickets still available at the Stadium's website. Trust me, you'll have a great time!

More on The New York Pops Summer Home in Forest Hills

Last week we helped announce the decision by The New York Pops to make Forest Hills Stadium its new summer home. Some readers had some questions about what this exactly means and how it all came to pass.
The Pops had been looking for years for the right outdoor venue for its summer concerts and found it right here in Forest Hills. This year they plan to have two concerts in August: with Sutton Foster on August 6, 2015 and with Pink Martini on August 7, 2015. The Pops hopes to have at least three concerts each summer starting next year.
As part of its outreach program called Kids in the Balcony, the Pops will offer free tickets to 2,000 children so they can learn and enjoy the music.
At the Launch Event last Thursday (pictured below), a representative of PS 175 expressed gratitude to Deborah Dillingham, the Queens representative on the NYC Panel for Education Policy; Anne M. Swanson, executor director of The New York Pops; Roland Meier, president of the West Side Tennis Club and Steven Reineke, the Pops Music Director. Frank Gullucio, district manager of Community Board 6, was also there to lend his support.
Overall, tickets are to range from $10 - $129. So get your tickets! We will have further updates as time goes by.
Last week we helped announce the decision by The New York Pops to make Forest Hills Stadium its new summer home. Some readers had some questions about what this exactly means and how it all came to pass.
The Pops had been looking for years for the right outdoor venue for its summer concerts and found it right here in Forest Hills. This year they plan to have two concerts in August: with Sutton Foster on August 6, 2015 and with Pink Martini on August 7, 2015. The Pops hopes to have at least three concerts each summer starting next year.
As part of its outreach program called Kids in the Balcony, the Pops will offer free tickets to 2,000 children so they can learn and enjoy the music.
At the Launch Event last Thursday (pictured below), a representative of PS 175 expressed gratitude to Deborah Dillingham, the Queens representative on the NYC Panel for Education Policy; Anne M. Swanson, executor director of The New York Pops; Roland Meier, president of the West Side Tennis Club and Steven Reineke, the Pops Music Director. Frank Gullucio, district manager of Community Board 6, was also there to lend his support.
Overall, tickets are to range from $10 - $129. So get your tickets! We will have further updates as time goes by.
