Forest Hills Greenmarket Returns in April

Given all the gloomy weather lately (this really is one of my least favorite times of year, overcast days, no snow, but still too cold to enjoy the outdoors very much), thought I'd post this about when our Greenmarket returns..
Forest Hills Greenmarket
Open Sunday, 4/7/13 - 12/29/13
8:00 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Buffalo Wild Wings Coming to Forest Hills

Thanks to Corey, one of the blog's readers, for spotting this ad on Craigslist: Buffalo Wild Wings - Restaurant Delivery Manager (Based in Forest Hills)
We had heard weeks back that they had leased the Staples location. I just emailed a representative for the chain yesterday about it, but hadn't heard back yet.

Prime Restaurant Space Available

I've been contacted over the past several weeks by several readers who wanted to make sure I was aware that Liang's, one of Forest Hills' only chinese restaurants (not counting all of the many Asian fusion restaurants we have), had closed. We did post about them closing several weeks ago, when they were telling everyone it was just temporary. But the original information I had heard was indeed true—they've closed for good, and, as a result, opened up a prime location for another restaurateur willing to give it a go in the heart of Forest Hills' 'famous' restaurant row.

Just Some Observations...

Seems like:

1) There's a lot more spam and hacking going on all of a sudden (generally speaking, not on this blog) and...
2) Seems like there's suddenly a lot more crazy folks on the subway. Virtually every trip I've gone  on in the past few weeks has had one dude or another shouting curses at himself or just thin air. Very unusual. Used to be rare and suddenly it's fairly often. Either it's a cut in policing, more crazies, or just something in the stars (maybe that meteorite).

Coming Soon: Banter Irish Bar and Kitchen

Old Vienna Cafe will be reopening by St. Patrick's Day as Banter Irish Bar and Kitchen. According to one of the owners, "we are aiming for a higher end Irish-centric menu with quality drink and excellent service. I think the people in this neighborhood will be pleasantly surprised by what we have in store."

He adds, "We are currently doing a little bit of work but are remaining open for the time being before we are completely ready to return. At which point we will be closed for a little while to put on the finishing touches."

Meteor Hits Russia

At least 1,000 people were injured. NASA was tracking a large asteroid passing by the earth today. But they say the two are unrelated. Weird. On the second video the explosion occurs around 1:12 into it.

Indie Coffee Shop Location

If — and it is still a big "if" since absolutely nothing has been confirmed yet — we do get a new indie coffee shop, this is the location in Station Square they are thinking of. It is on Greenway Terrace.

Hilarious

By the way...

For any of you out there who think this past weekend's storm was overblown, and wish I would stop posting about it, well, I halfway agree with you. Firstly, for the NYC area, this was not much of a big deal, unless you were way out in Suffolk County (especially if you were silly enough to be on the LIE all night, almost freezing to death.)

But, my meteorological sources inform me that we are now in the thick of 'Winter 2013' - you know, kind of like a regular winter where it's cold and you actually get snow. Almost forgot what that was.

So, we can expect more cold and more snowstorms (they are saying a huge one is possible again this coming weekend) for a good part of February, and then we can start getting excited about Spring!!

Satellite Image of Blizzard

Thought you all might like to see this cool photo of the weekend's storm. It looked almost like a hurricane at one point as it hit New England. They are now forecasting about 1 - 3 inches of snow for us Wednesday night followed by another potential Nor' Easter this weekend.

The Blizzard of 2013 Photos

I love how a snowstorm transforms the world overnight. Here's a few photos I took around Forest Hills this afternoon.

The Blizzard of 2013

I took these around 11:30 p.m., pretty much the height of the blizzard. I think we had about 4 or 5 inches on the ground at the time...

Blizzard Warning Issued for NYC

The Lindsay Scenario?

At least one major meteorologist is now comparing the scenario unfolding with tomorrow's storm with the Sunday, February 9, 1969 storm, the one that tarnished Mayor Lindsay's reputation forever. The idea is that the changeover to rain that is being widely predicted for the NYC area, thus keeping accumulations down, will never occur. The result is we could get upwards of two feet of snow. This is just one prediction, mind you. However... here is the latest snowfall map from one of the weather models, hinting that this storm now taking shape is starting to zero in on the NYC area. Visit WeatherBell Analytics for more details.

Buried... or Just Plain Wet

This was the beautiful scene in Kew Gardens on Sunday...

And word is that come Friday we either get buried by two feet of snow in an historic blizzard ... or, we just get a little wet.

Newest Food Truck

This Hibachi truck started appearing on 71st/Continental over the past couple of weeks. Has anyone tried it?

Quite Fascinating...

Bones Under Parking Lot Belonged to Richard III
In one of Britain’s most dramatic modern archaeological finds, tests identified the remains of the reviled English monarch, a discovery that could lead to a reassessment of his reign.

The Meaning of Lettuce, or Lack Thereof

So, is there a larger message in the fact that our new Chipotle was out of lettuce this morning when I went to get my chicken burrito? I think so. I think congratulations are in order to our fellow Forest Hillers and other Queens residents who have apparently done the near impossible: surprised even a major restaurant chain with their demand for its tasty burritos and other fixens.

Now, either I'm wrong and it's just an insignificant foul-up, or there is bigger meaning in the fact that Chipotle, with all its systems and forecasting expertise, fell short in predicting how much lettuce its Forest Hills store would need come the first Saturday of its opening week.

Yes, Chipotle, I know it's hard to fathom that a New York City neighborhood in this day and age could be this desperate for your offerings, but it is true. We are not your ordinary NYC neighborhood out here in FoHi. We've been kinda neglected in the food department until very recently in our little Queens hamlet, and Chipotle, you're now experiencing that first hand. It may be a bit of a struggle for a while to keep up, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it eventually.

And, in the meantime, if you want to ease some of the customer surge at your new FoHi location, you may want to spread the word to your food chain friends (like Shake Shack), that you need some help out here in The Hills - desperately! You need help feeding all those hungry Fohillers! Pronto!

The Forest Hills Chipotle was already filling up by 11:20 a.m. Saturday. Lines have been spilling onto Austin St.
My first "made in Forest Hills" Chipotle burrito, about to be devoured.

Rest in Peace Mayor Koch

Wow, how are we going to get along without Ed Koch? New York has lost one of its greatest friends.
